The San Francisco 49ers have been busy in the offseason, with head coach Kyle Shanahan shedding light on their recent moves in free agency. One name that stands out is Nate Hobbs, a versatile defensive back who’s been on the Niners' radar for quite some time. Shanahan clarified that Hobbs isn’t being eyed for the safety position, but his skill set in the secondary is undeniable.
Shanahan first took notice of Hobbs during joint practices with the Raiders. Hobbs has made a name for himself as a formidable nickel corner, and his ability to play both inside and outside makes him a valuable asset. The 49ers had even considered trading for him a couple of years back, indicating how highly they regard his talents.
Financially, Hobbs is on a one-year deal that wouldn’t cost the team much if things didn’t pan out. The 49ers would incur $3.1 million in dead money but save $270,000 if they decided to part ways.
However, Shanahan has outlined Hobbs’ potential roles clearly. He’s set to step in for Upton Stout at nickel if needed and could also be the first choice at outside cornerback if Deommodore Lenoir or Renardo Green are sidelined.
This is a shift from Chase Lucas’s role last season, where Lucas primarily played in the slot and contributed significantly on special teams. Hobbs, on the other hand, has limited special teams experience, with just 29 snaps in 2025 and none in 2024.
The interest in Hobbs dates back to when Lenoir was more of an outside corner, and Jimmie Ward was dealing with injuries in 2022. At that time, Hobbs was still on his rookie contract, logging 500 snaps on the outside and 106 in the slot.
All in all, Hobbs’ arrival in San Francisco adds depth and flexibility to a 49ers secondary that’s looking to be both adaptable and resilient as they gear up for the season ahead.
