49ers Linked to Potential Stefon Diggs Acquisition Amid Offseason Buzz

Despite cap space and on-field performance in his favor, Stefon Diggs' potential legal distractions and age may be hurdles for the 49ers' offseason plans.

The New England Patriots are contemplating a significant roster move this offseason, with the potential release of veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs. This decision could free up $20.8 million in cap space if executed with a post-June 1 designation.

Meanwhile, the San Francisco 49ers are navigating their own wide receiver challenges. As they look ahead, their options appear limited.

Currently, only Ricky Pearsall and Demarcus Robinson are under contract through 2026. Pearsall has struggled with health issues, and Robinson's major contribution came during the Niners' Wild Card victory over the Eagles last January.

With Brandon Aiyuk likely departing and Jauan Jennings entering free agency, the 49ers have some decisions to make.

There’s been chatter linking San Francisco to big-name receivers like Mike Evans from the Buccaneers. However, if Diggs becomes available, he might catch the 49ers' eye.

With $41.2 million in projected cap space, Diggs could be a tempting target for head coach Kyle Shanahan's offense. His track record speaks volumes, having surpassed 1,000 receiving yards in seven of the last eight seasons. Yet, at 32, Diggs doesn't align with the 49ers' recent strategy of getting younger and more cost-effective.

Adding to the complexity are Diggs’ legal issues, involving charges of felony strangulation or suffocation and misdemeanor assault and battery from an alleged dispute. While he has pleaded "not guilty" and awaits a pre-trial hearing, the 49ers might prefer to steer clear of potential distractions, especially with their need for dependable receivers.

Given these factors, it seems prudent for the 49ers to pass on Diggs and focus on other options that align with their long-term strategy.
