As the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine kicks off, all eyes are on the top draft prospects showcasing their skills and making their case for the upcoming draft. But the Combine is more than just a proving ground for future stars; it's a hub for NFL teams to engage in crucial discussions about trades and roster moves.
Last year, the San Francisco 49ers made headlines by trading wide receiver Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders during Combine week. With a keen eye on strengthening their roster this offseason, the 49ers might be gearing up for more strategic moves.
General Manager John Lynch highlighted the significance of the Combine for trade talks, noting that it's one of the rare occasions where most general managers gather. “There’s a couple, three probably, inflection points,” Lynch explained.
“Usually down at Mobile for the Senior Bowl, then at the Combine, and at league meetings. This week, everyone’s in that mindset coming off the season, looking forward.”
With some extra cap space, the 49ers are positioned to be active in free agency, but the trade market might be their preferred route for addressing key needs, particularly on the defensive line. While free agency offers options like Jaelen Phillips and Khalil Mack, the 49ers might seek a more favorable contract through trades, potentially sending out draft picks in return.
The defensive tackle position also presents an opportunity for improvement. With limited free agency options, San Francisco could explore trades, similar to their acquisition of Maliek Collins two years ago.
On the flip side, there are whispers of the 49ers considering moving players, with Renardo Green emerging as a potential trade candidate. ESPN analysts Dan Graziano and Ben Solak estimate an 80 percent chance of Green being traded, citing his fit and performance inconsistencies.
As the Combine unfolds, the 49ers’ strategy will become clearer. Whether they dive into the trade market or explore other avenues, the coming weeks promise to be pivotal for their offseason plans.
