49ers Linked To Familiar Face After Jaguars Move

San Francisco 49ers eye potential reunion with Arik Armstead amid Jacksonville's cap crunch, presenting a strategic opportunity to bolster their defensive line.

In the wake of the opening waves of free agency, several players are finding themselves on the chopping block, and there's a name on that list that San Francisco 49ers fans will recognize: Arik Armstead.

Armstead, who was with the Niners from 2015 to 2023, refused a pay cut in 2024 and was released, eventually signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Despite productive seasons in Jacksonville, the team's tight salary cap might make him a potential cap casualty.

The Jaguars could save $14.5 million by releasing Armstead after June 1, a move that might be necessary given their limited cap space of just $6.9 million. While Jacksonville has re-signed some players and added running back Chris Rodriguez Jr., they've lost key players like Travis Etienne Jr. and Quay Walker in free agency and haven't made any significant additions.

Without a first-round draft pick, the Jaguars might not make big moves this summer, but releasing Armstead could give them the flexibility to address roster needs they can't fill in the draft.

Could the 49ers swoop in if Armstead becomes available? It's certainly possible.

San Francisco has been focused on making their defensive line younger and more cost-effective, drafting Mykel Williams, Alfred Collins, and C.J. West in 2025, and trading for Osa Odighizuwa. However, they've also faced setbacks, such as the sudden retirement of edge rusher Bryce Huff and ACL injuries to Williams and Nick Bosa.

While Bosa is likely to return by Week 1, Williams' status is uncertain. Armstead, though perhaps not an every-down player at this stage, excelled in setting the edge against the run during his time with the 49ers. He could fill the gap left by Williams and offer valuable veteran leadership if the young pro isn't ready for the regular season.

Bringing back Armstead could be a strategic move for the Niners, providing depth and experience to a defensive line in transition.
