A proposed move out of ESPN would give the 49ers exactly the kind of jolt that fits their timeline: Atlanta Falcons safety Jessie Bates III landing in San Francisco, with a 2027 third-round pick going to the Falcons and a 2028 sixth-rounder coming back to the Niners.
That kind of swing makes sense when you look at where San Francisco is headed. The 49ers are trying to squeeze every last bit out of a championship window that feels tighter by the day, and with a number of core players getting closer to the end of their careers, the urgency is real. A run at a Super Bowl is no longer a nice idea - it’s the point.
ESPN’s Seth Walder floated the trade in a piece on five big training camp deals, and his case centered on the same connection that makes the idea pop: Raheem Morris. San Francisco’s defensive coordinator spent three seasons with Bates in Atlanta, and Walder pointed out that Morris could use help at safety next to Ji'Ayir Brown and Malik Mustapha.
As Walder put it, "It just so happens that former Falcons head coach Raheem Morris, who coached Bates the past two seasons, is now the 49ers' defensive coordinator. And he could use an upgrade at safety alongside Ji'Ayir Brown and Malik Mustapha.
The timing works, as the 49ers are contenders who could use defensive help after ranking 25th in EPA allowed per dropback last season."
Brown and Mustapha already give San Francisco a workable tandem. Together, they posted three interceptions, three pass breakups, and more than 150 tackles last season.
But Bates would be a clear step up. Even as he gets close to 30, he has picked off at least three passes in every season of his career, including 13 interceptions over three seasons with Morris in Atlanta.
That’s the appeal here: Bates gives the 49ers the true single-high safety they don’t currently have. He wouldn’t push Brown or Mustapha out of the picture, either.
Brown spent more than half of his snaps last season in the slot or the box, and that usage could continue, especially in dime looks. Bates would simply let Morris move pieces around without giving up the deep coverage presence that changes how a defense can play.
If the goal is to turn this group into a top-10 defense, Bates looks like the sort of veteran who could move the needle.
