North Texas running back Jahiem White is starting to look like the kind of mid-round draft target the 49ers could circle for next offseason.
Through five games in 2026, White has put together a loud start that’s hard to ignore: 582 yards, eight touchdowns, and a 6.9 yards-per-carry average for an offense putting up 40.6 points per game. He didn’t really force his way onto draft boards until a huge outing against Tulsa, when he ripped off 231 rushing yards and a touchdown.
At five-foot-seven and 190 pounds, the redshirt junior brings a compact, dangerous style that shows up immediately on tape. White is slippery in tight spaces, hard to finish off once defenders get hands on him, and dangerous with the way he slips contact and fires through creases. His jump cuts can make defenders look stuck in place.
The other part of his game that stands out is how patient he is before he hits the gas. White waits for blocks to develop, then uses his short-area burst to explode through the lane.
If the first hole closes, he can throttle down and find another one without losing much momentum. That combination lets him build speed fast and keeps defenders from getting comfortable.
There are limits, though. White doesn’t have the power to live between the tackles as a downhill runner, and he’s not the kind of back who will regularly run through contact. That points him toward a change-of-pace and third-down role in the NFL, which means he’ll need the right partner alongside him instead of carrying the whole load by himself.
Still, that kind of skill set can fit. The 49ers have gotten a lot out of Christian McCaffrey over the past five seasons, but he’s now 30 years old and won’t be around forever. That makes this the right time for San Francisco to start thinking about the next backfield weapon for Brock Purdy.
If the 49ers go that route next offseason, White would be an intriguing name to watch. His elusiveness, vision, and burst give him the profile of a big-play threat who could be available in the middle rounds of the 2027 NFL Draft.

49ers Face A Mac Jones Decision Fans Cant Ignore
The 49ers have been getting calls on Mac Jones, but the buzz around the backup quarterback is not changing the teams view of him. ESPNs Dan Graziano reported that San Francisco sees Jones as important insurance behind Brock Purdy, which helps explain why the club is expected to keep him rather than move him before the NFL trade deadline.
San Francisco has reportedly heard from multiple teams, but the asking price remains steep enough that a deal may not come together. Jones value to the 49ers is rooted in what he already showed in a starting role last season, when he filled in for eight games and helped the team go 5-3, giving the front office a reason to treat him as more than just a spare arm. 49ers Week 4 Outlook Suddenly Hinges On One Late Decision
A late rib injury has turned Mike Evans into one of the biggest pregame variables on the 49ers Week 4 radar, with the veteran wide receiver now listed as questionable for Sundays matchup against the Denver Broncos. Evans was hurt in Week 3 and is being treated as a game-time decision, leaving San Francisco to wait until roughly 90 minutes before kickoff for the official word.
Evans has made it clear he wants to suit up, and his history of playing through similar injuries only adds to the uncertainty around how much the 49ers can count on him. For a team trying to keep its offense on schedule against a Broncos defense that can make every possession matter, his availability could shape the way San Francisco approaches the game from the opening drive on. 49ers Head Into Week 4 With One New Wrinkle And A Concern
Kyle Shanahan spent part of the week explaining a curious hook-and-lateral call from the win over the Arizona Cardinals, framing it as a low-risk idea in a tough spot rather than some grand gamble. For the 49ers, it was another reminder that even the little choices in a division game can draw attention when the margins are tight and every possession matters.
Now the focus shifts to Week 4, where San Francisco is set to get a new look on the edge with Matthew Judon headed for his 49ers debut after being elevated from the practice squad. The roster move adds some intrigue to a defense that is already dealing with a separate concern, since Fred Warner was fined twice for unnecessary roughness in the Arizona game and will be watching that part of his game closely moving forward.
