The 49ers’ left guard picture is tightening up, and Kyle Shanahan sounds like a coach who’s nearing a call.
On Tuesday, Shanahan said the competition is “close to being decided,” with just the second-to-last day of evaluation left before the team has to make a real judgment. Connor Colby and Carver Willis are the two names in the mix, while Robert Jones has been out hurt for the last two weeks. Shanahan said the team will weigh that absence as it decides who it wants to play in Week 1.
“I mean, it’s close to being decided, and it needs to be close. Today is the second-to-last day that we’ll get to evaluate.
We’ll get it on the game. You’ve got Connor, and you’ve got Carver [Willis] who are both competing.
And we’ve got [Robert] Jones who’s been hurt, so we’ve got to balance that off, not having him the last two weeks. But that’s something we’ll discuss and decide on who we want to play in Week 1.”
Jones and Austen Pleasants are both expected back “around Australia,” according to Shanahan, and neither will play in the preseason finale. Shanahan also said both players will get on the plane, which could be a hint that they’re in line to make the roster. If that’s the case, Colby’s path gets a lot narrower.
It’s been a strange ride for the rookie. A year ago, Ben Bartch opened the season at left guard before getting hurt in October, Spencer Burford was dealing with injury early, and Colby was forced into action as the backup.
By season’s end, none of that trio had settled the spot. Colby, a seventh-round rookie, probably should never have been pushed into that role so early, and the coaching staff expected him to take a step forward over the offseason.
That confidence showed when Colby got the first crack at the starting job in training camp. But once the pads came on, he was quickly bumped down the depth chart.
Now the injuries to Jones and Pleasants have pulled him right back into the conversation. Two weeks ago, it wasn’t even clear whether Colby would make the roster.
The rest of the interior picture also matters here. Pleasants can play tackle and guard.
Jones can handle both guard spots. Willis has worked at all three interior positions.
If the 49ers keep the group Shanahan’s comments seem to point toward, the roster would include Trent Williams, Pleasants, Jones, Willis, Jake Brendel, Dominick Puni, Colton McKivitz and Brett Toth.
That would leave one final spot, and it comes down to Colby or Enrique Cruz Jr. Cruz Jr.’s case may depend on how he looks in practice and in the preseason, but if he keeps appearing lost, the team may not be too worried about losing him on waivers. That decision, more than anything, is the one worth watching.
Thursday should reveal a lot. If Colby only works at right guard and doesn’t get a shot on the left side, the battle is essentially over, especially with Jones and Pleasants sidelined.
If Willis barely plays, that would suggest the staff already sees him as a starter. But if he gets a full half at left guard, the fight likely rolls into next week, and the answer may not come until the 49ers are warming up in Week 1.
