The 49ers are still standing alone at the top heading into Week 7, and the reason is simple: they keep winning even when the roster keeps getting hit.
San Francisco moved to 6-0 with a Monday night escape over Washington, a game that got messy late but still ended with the Niners protecting both their unbeaten record and their grip on the NFC West. Across the power rankings roundup, all eight outlets kept them at No. 1, which says plenty about how the league is viewing Kyle Shanahan’s team right now. The wins are stacking up, and the injuries haven’t been enough to knock them off the perch.
The latest blow came with Mike Evans leaving Monday night’s game with an Achilles injury, adding another name to a receiver group that’s already been thinned out in brutal fashion. ESPN pointed out that Ricky Pearsall, De'Zhaun Stribling, Christian Kirk and Demarcus Robinson were all expected to be among the team’s top five receivers and all landed on IR before Week 3.
On top of that, Deebo Samuel Sr. has been dealing with a multiweek hamstring injury, and Evans had already been playing through bumps and bruises before he exited with Achilles tendonitis. The upside, according to that report, is that most of those players are expected back this season.
The downside is that San Francisco has been forced to patch things together on the fly.
That reality showed up again Monday night. Yahoo Sports noted that Shanahan said Evans’ injury is not considered serious and that no more testing is needed, but it also pointed out that the offense didn’t look good without him.
In the second half, the 49ers managed just 67 net yards, and 65 of those came on the opening drive after halftime. For a Shanahan offense, that kind of drop-off stands out.
Still, the results keep landing in the same place. FOX Sports called the 49ers the best team in football a third of the way through the season, even while noting that they’re “held together at times by Band-Aids and gauze tape.”
CBS Sports said San Francisco made things too close for comfort against Washington but still found a way. Bleacher Report added that great teams survive these games, and the 49ers have done that six times now.
Christian McCaffrey remains a huge reason why. The Athletic said the 30-year-old running back may wind up being all the Niners have left if the injury issues keep piling up, then noted that if he stays healthy, he might be enough. He put up 117 yards of offense and two touchdowns Monday night and now sits fourth among running backs in fantasy scoring at 20.3 points per game.
The bigger picture, though, is that San Francisco keeps adapting. Bleacher Report credited Shanahan with continuing to adjust the offense to changing personnel, saying Kyle Juszczyk’s return helped, while Brock Purdy has played at an MVP level regardless of who has been in the lineup.
Sports Illustrated also highlighted Purdy’s place in the MVP conversation after the win. On the defensive side, that same report described the unit as superb under first-year coordinator Raheem Morris.
The road doesn’t get easier immediately. FOX Sports noted that the 49ers now head to Atlanta on a short week and need to get through that game before their bye while trying to stay undefeated. For now, though, they remain exactly where they’ve been all season: No. 1 everywhere.

49ers Survived A Scare Thanks To One Late Defensive Stand
A tense Monday night in Washington nearly turned into a costly slip for the 49ers, who had to sweat through a second-half surge before escaping with their unbeaten record intact. Malik Mustapha came up with the kind of defensive play that can define a close game, helping San Francisco fend off a Commanders comeback after Washington had already lost top receiver Terry McLaurin to a knee injury.
The 49ers still left the field with a 6-0 start, but the night was not clean. An apparent Achilles injury to wide receiver Mike Evans added another layer of concern to a win that required late-game poise and a key stop when Washington seemed to be closing in on the end zone. [Read more 🡒]
49ers Just Sent An Encouraging Signal On Mike Evans
The 49ers Week 6 roster moves offered a small but notable glimpse into how theyre managing the wide receiver picture, with Christian Kirk staying on injured reserve and Mike Evans still listed as questionable. San Francisco also added some immediate depth by elevating wideout Malik Turner and linebacker Jalen Graham from the practice squad, a move that gives the offense a little more insurance while the injury situation sorts itself out.
For now, the receiver room is built around Evans, Brandin Cooks, Jacob Cowing and Jordan Watkins, with Kirk still waiting for a chance to return under his designation. The combination of the inactive status on one receiver and the extra depth additions suggests the 49ers are preparing for multiple contingencies, and Evans availability remains the headline the team is still trying to settle before game day. 49ers Primetime Scare Put Focus On Two Receivers For Very Different Reasons
Monday night put two receivers in the spotlight for very different reasons, and neither moment had much to do with the stat sheet. Terry McLaurin was being covered one-on-one by 49ers cornerback Deommodore Lenoir when a knee injury stopped him in his tracks, turning a routine play into a grim scene that required a medical cart and an air cast.
On the other sideline, Mike Evans was still working through his own issues while catching passes from Brock Purdy, and he also showed a little class in the aftermath by shaking hands with McLaurin. Evans later exited briefly with an Achilles issue before making it back to the locker room under his own power, a reminder that even in a primetime game, health concerns can linger long after the next snap.
