The 49ers got a few encouraging signs at Thursday’s practice, but the clearest defensive boost came from a familiar face shedding the non-contact jersey.
Cornerback Upton Stout’s return to full participation is a strong development for San Francisco as it comes out of the bye week, according to the Bay Area News Group’s Cam Inman. Stout had been dealing with a shoulder issue that bothered him in the 49ers’ final two games before the break. He left most of the fourth quarter against the Washington Commanders and then missed the Atlanta Falcons game entirely.
San Francisco felt that absence. When Stout was out, the 49ers had to patch together the nickel spot, and neither answer held up.
In Week 6, veteran safety Ashtyn Davis was asked to fill in there, and Washington went after him repeatedly. Per Pro Football Focus, Davis allowed three catches for 35 yards on three targets.
A week later, the 49ers tried a different look, moving Deommodore Lenoir inside and putting veteran Jack Jones on the outside. That setup didn’t last long.
Atlanta moved the ball freely, with Jones giving up four catches for 39 yards on five targets while also drawing two penalties. The 49ers eventually turned to rookie Ephesians Prysock in Jones’ place, and Jones was released during the bye.
Stout now looks set to reclaim his usual nickel role, with Lenoir sliding back outside. That Lenoir-Stout-Renardo Green combination has already delivered plenty of success this season, and San Francisco doesn’t appear deep enough at corner to absorb a hit to any of those three.
His return should give the pass defense a real lift, and it comes at a good time with the Las Vegas Raiders coming to Levi’s Stadium on Sunday. The source article also notes Raiders quarterback Kirk Cousins is in the middle of one of his most prolific seasons as a pro.

George Kittle Is Still Chasing More 49ers History
George Kittle is heading into his 10th season with the 49ers, and the rsum keeps getting longer. Drafted in 2017, he has already carved out a place in franchise history, and the latest milestone only adds to the sense that he is still building something special in San Francisco.
Even after working his way back from an Achilles injury, Kittle has remained one of the offenses most reliable playmakers, and he has said he wants to spend his entire career with the 49ers. For a player who has already passed one major franchise mark, the question now is how much more history he can stack before this run is over. [Read more 🡒]
49ers Could Still Make One Deadline Swing Fans Never Saw Coming
With the NFL trade deadline drawing near, the 49ers are once again in the familiar position of being linked to help rather than just waiting to see what the market does. The conversation around San Francisco has centered on possible upgrades from around the league, with the idea being simple enough: if there is a way to strengthen the roster before the stretch run, the 49ers will at least be in the mix.
The names being tossed around reflect the range of possibilities, from defensive help to offensive depth and even a familiar edge presence. Nothing is official, and this is still firmly in the speculative stage, but the fact that San Francisco can be mentioned in the same breath as so many different types of targets says plenty about where the team stands as the deadline approaches. 49ers Have A Familiar Edge In The NFCs Biggest Race
The 49ers have built a habit of showing up when the calendar turns serious, and that matters again as the NFC race tightens. Since 2022, their November and December regular-season work has generally been a strength, with the kind of late-season consistency that has helped keep them in the hunt for the conferences top seed.
San Francisco has also tended to come out of the bye ready to play, which only adds to the sense that this team knows how to navigate the stretch run. The upcoming schedule still has to be played, but the 49ers enter it with a familiar edge and a recent track record that makes them look well positioned to keep control of the No. 1-seed chase.
