San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch offered a fresh update on wide receiver Mike Evans’ persistent leg issue, and the message was pretty clear: the team is taking the long view.
Speaking on KNBR, as recorded by David Bonilla of 49ers Webzone, Lynch said Evans has been putting in the work and that the goal now is to settle the injury down rather than rush anything. “Mike's been working tirelessly.
He'll continue to do that. He's on a great plan, and I think the idea is you've just got to quiet that thing down.
We dealt with that with Christian (McCaffrey) last year-remember, he had that bilateral. We talked about that a lot, and fortunately with Mike, it's just on the one side.
He's dealt with it some throughout his career, but it got to a point where it was really inhibiting his ability to play. At that point, you've got to take him out and try to quiet the thing down.
Making good progress on that. We need to continue, and Mike will be tireless in his efforts to do that.
I think with things like tendinitis, it can (require maintenance), but that's why I think you take the time upfront, and you make sure you kind of have given it the best opportunity to be gone and stay gone," Lynch said. "I think that's all you can ask for.
You listen to the experts on that; you do all the therapy that's required. And Mike, he's a pro."
The injury has lingered long enough to affect Evans’ availability, and Lynch made it sound like the 49ers are focused on making sure the problem doesn’t keep hanging around once he’s back.
San Francisco has been dealing with the ripple effects of not having its full group of playmakers on the field consistently, even as the team keeps winning. The season has been frustrating for that reason, but the 49ers still have enough to stay afloat.
Even so, getting Evans healthy would change the equation. A player of that caliber gives San Francisco another level on offense, and when the roster is whole, the team has the look of a group capable of being among the best in the league. The catch, as ever, is getting that healthy version on the field.
Right now, the 49ers sit as the clear top team in the NFC West. That stands out in a division that, in 2025, featured the three best teams in the conference.

49ers Keep Getting Linked To Another Massive Roster Swing
The 49ers are still sorting out what their defensive line rotation will look like after adding DeForest Buckner, and the early read is that the group will be managed with a clear eye toward keeping the most impactful bodies active on game day. The discussion around who fits into that mix has naturally spilled into the broader roster picture, because San Francisco has a long history of exploring bold moves when it believes a premium talent can change the shape of the offense.
That is why the Garrett Wilson chatter has started to linger around the 49ers again, even if it remains speculative and far from a confirmed path. Any deal for the Jets receiver would come with real cap and roster consequences for New York, which is part of what makes the idea so complicated, but San Franciscos willingness to be linked to another major swing says plenty about how aggressively it continues to evaluate ways to raise the ceiling of the team. 49ers Face A Trade Deadline Choice That Could Test Their Patience
The 49ers already made one notable move by bringing in DeForest Buckner, but with two weeks left before the trade deadline, the front office still has time to decide whether to keep shopping or stand pat. San Francisco has been linked to help along the defensive front, and the conversation around the roster has centered on whether the team should chase another addition or trust the group it has built while waiting for key contributors to come back.
What makes the decision tricky is the balance between urgency and patience. The 49ers want to stay competitive now, but there is also a real concern about making a move that changes the developmental path for younger players or creates a ripple effect elsewhere on the roster. For a team with playoff expectations, the deadline is less about making noise and more about deciding how much it is willing to disrupt for a short-term upgrade. [Read more 🡒]
Chargers May Be Making A Costly Khalil Mack Deadline Mistake
The Chargers are heading into their week eight bye at 0-6, and with the trade deadline creeping closer, the front office is already getting calls on a few names. Khalil Mack is the biggest one in the mix, but Los Angeles has so far pushed back on inquiries around both the veteran pass rusher and running back Kimani Vidal. Macks situation is the one worth watching most closely because he is on an expiring contract, and the longer the Chargers sit on a winless start, the harder it becomes to ignore the business side of the roster.
Around the league, the market for defensive talent has already been nudged by recent deals involving Jeffery Simmons and DeForest Buckner, and that could matter for how Los Angeles views its leverage. For a team that still has not shown any urgency to move Mack, the question is whether holding firm now protects value or leaves the Chargers waiting too long in a market that may not stay favorable for much longer.
