49ers Injuries Just Created A Huge Chance For Jordan Watkins

With Mike Evans sidelined, Jordan Watkins faces a crucial opportunity to prove his worth to the 49ers and secure his spot on the team.

The 49ers are heading into Week 7 with a familiar kind of problem: who can actually hold up when the injury list starts thinning the offense out?

Mike Evans is the headline here. The veteran pass catcher is dealing with several bumps and bruises, and the latest issue - Achilles tendinitis - kept him out of San Francisco’s most recent game against the Washington Commanders. Now the 49ers have to sort out when he comes back, and that decision could open the door for a young receiver who desperately needs it.

That receiver is Jordan Watkins.

The second-year wideout is expected to see more opportunities in the coming weeks, especially with San Francisco set to face the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday before heading into its bye. Even after the break, there’s a real chance Evans misses another week or two, which could leave the 49ers leaning on untested options for longer than planned.

Watkins needs those snaps, because the resume so far has done him no favors. After a year and a half, he still hasn’t done much to show he can be a reliable NFL contributor. Since the start of 2025, he has caught only five passes, and much of his time with the team has been spent on the practice squad.

His draft status does him no favors either. As a day-three pick, Watkins doesn’t come with much capital or patience attached, which means the clock is already ticking on his chance to carve out a real role.

If Evans misses one or more games, Brandin Cooks would be the only receiver ahead of Watkins on the depth chart. That would leave Brock Purdy needing to lean on Watkins as a genuine part of the passing game.

But Week 6 did not exactly push the conversation in his favor. Watkins played 47 snaps, the most of any San Francisco receiver, yet he came away with just one catch. When Evans left the field, the offense as a whole stalled.

That’s the tension now. The opportunity is there, but it may not last long.

If Watkins keeps coming up empty, the 49ers could look outside the building and bring in help through a trade. That would likely push him further down the depth chart and make his path back to meaningful snaps even steeper.

And the reinforcements are coming. Mike Evans, Deebo Samuel, and Demarcus Robinson are expected back within a few weeks, while De'Zhaun Stribling is expected to return later in the season. Once Purdy has that group back together, Watkins may find it hard to work his way back onto the field at all.

Nick Bosa Return Hope Just Got Very Real For 49ers Defense

Nick Bosas absence has been one of the biggest storylines hanging over the 49ers defense, and the latest signs are encouraging enough to keep the conversation going. Since the calf injury knocked him out in late September, San Francisco has had to manage without one of its most disruptive players, and the idea of getting him back has obvious appeal for a unit that feeds off edge pressure and game-changing plays.

There is real optimism around Bosas comeback, but the 49ers still do not have an official confirmation on when he will be ready to go. The timing matters because a return in early November would give San Francisco a major boost right as the season starts to tighten, and the defense is clearly watching this one closely. 49ers Pass Rush Looks Different Even Without Key Edge Rushers

San Franciscos pass rush has been one of the clearest changes on the roster through the first six weeks, and the production has come even while the defense has been missing key edge help at times. The 49ers have consistently found pressure in ways they simply did not a year ago, with the front looking deeper, more varied and more disruptive than it did last season.

John Lynch pointed to a broader mix of reasons for the surge, from Raheem Morris influence on the defense to Chris Kiffins work with the line and the impact of added bodies up front. Osa Odighizuwa and Keion White have been part of that shift, while rookies Gracen Halton and Romello Height have also been pulled into the rotation as the 49ers have tried to keep the rush fresh despite injuries to Nick Bosa and Mykell Williams. 49ers Suddenly Have Real Freedom To Go All In

A strong start has left the 49ers in an enviable spot heading into the trade deadline, with the kind of flexibility that can change the shape of a season in a hurry. Between a healthy amount of salary-cap room and a roster built around veterans who are not getting any younger, San Francisco has every reason to treat this moment like a real window, not a passing opportunity.

What makes the situation even more interesting is how much draft capital the 49ers still have available to work with, which gives them room to chase help without stripping away the future. No move has surfaced yet, but that combination of urgency, resources and ambition is exactly why San Francisco is expected to be active if the right deal comes along. [Read more 🡒]
