49ers Hot Start Suddenly Comes With A Roster Concern

With the NFL trade deadline looming, John Lynch remains proactive in shoring up the 49ers' roster amidst a challenging wave of injuries.

The 49ers may be sitting at 4-0, but John Lynch isn’t treating this like a team that can afford to coast.

With the November 10 trade deadline about a month away, the San Francisco general manager made it clear the front office is still scanning the market. The unbeaten start hasn’t changed his approach.

“I think you’re always in active mode,” Lynch told KNBR this week.

That mindset fits the way this organization has operated before. The 49ers have a track record of making midseason moves, and the 2023 trade for Chase Young stands out as the one that helped fuel their run to Super Bowl LVIII.

This time, the urgency is coming from the injury list, which has turned into a weekly headache. No team in football has lost more player-games to injury through the first four weeks. San Francisco has 16 players on injured reserve and two more on the PUP list, and that doesn’t even include Nick Bosa (calf) or Kyle Juszczyk (knee sprain), both of whom are expected back at some point this month.

The defensive line has taken the hardest hit. Alfred Collins is out for the season with a torn patellar tendon, and C.J. West’s knee surgery could sideline him until late in the year.

Right now, only four defensive linemen from the original 53-man roster are healthy. The 49ers have filled in the gaps with former practice-squad players and street signings, and somehow those stopgaps have held up better than expected.

Still, the deeper numbers suggest the strain is real. San Francisco is in the bottom third of the league in both run-defense efficiency and sack rate.

There is some help on the horizon from inside the building. Mykel Williams, who is coming back from last November’s ACL tear, could make his season debut as early as Sunday against Seattle. Romello Height has already returned.

Lynch sounded upbeat about what the defense could look like once more pieces are available, saying opponents will have their hands full. But banking on a full, clean recovery across this roster is a dangerous game, especially for a team that has been hit hard in recent seasons.

That’s why the 49ers are expected to keep looking for help, with a stout interior lineman to strengthen the run defense and an edge rusher who can work opposite Bosa among the obvious targets.

Washington, which is off to a 1-3 start, could emerge as a seller, and defensive tackle Daron Payne, who is in the final year of his deal, fits the kind of profile San Francisco would be chasing.

Christian McCaffrey Shares A Big Family Milestone During 49ers Season

Christian McCaffreys season has come with a major family milestone as well. The 49ers running back and his wife, Olivia Culpo, shared family photos on Oct. 10 announcing the birth of their second child, adding a personal highlight to an already busy stretch of football life in San Francisco.

The baby arrived on Sept. 29, and the timing was no accident. Culpo arranged the delivery around a 49ers off day so McCaffrey could be there, a detail that underscores how carefully the family worked to make the moment fit within the grind of the season. Friends, family and NFL connections quickly sent congratulations, and for McCaffrey, the newest chapter at home now runs alongside everything happening on the field. [Read more 🡒]

Seahawks Niners Clash Took An Ugly Turn Fans Need To See

The 49ers matchup with Seattle got chippy in a hurry, and Dre Greenlaw found himself at the center of it late in the game. After a personal foul penalty for a late hit on Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold, the San Francisco linebacker got into a sideline altercation that quickly escalated and put an already testy division game over the edge.

Greenlaw has never been shy about playing on a hot edge, and this latest scene only adds to that reputation after his previous profanity-laced confrontation with Broncos coach Sean Payton. For the 49ers, the concern is bigger than one ugly moment, because losing a defender like Greenlaw in that kind of fashion can shift the tenor of a game and leave the league watching closely afterward. 49ers Defense Suddenly Has A Week 5 Problem And Possible Boost

The 49ers continue to lean into the kind of defensive flexibility Kyle Shanahan has talked about, with Emmanwori showing up in multiple spots as part of a unit built to move pieces around and adjust on the fly. It is the sort of versatility that has helped San Francisco survive early-season bumps, and it has also kept the defense stocked with options even as the rotation has shifted from week to week.

Dre Greenlaws edge is part of that identity, though it comes with a cost, and Shanahan has made clear that his aggressive style is not exactly a passive one. The bigger swing could come next week, when help along the defensive line may finally be closer, giving the 49ers a chance to add some badly needed juice before a matchup with Washington.
