49ers GM Compares Jauan Jennings to NBA Star for One Fiery Trait

49ers GM John Lynch sees Jauan Jennings as a disruptive force in the best way-drawing a bold comparison to NBA agitator Draymond Green.

When it comes to the art of getting under an opponent’s skin, some players just have the knack-and in the case of 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings, it’s not just about the talk. It’s about the way he plays the game: relentlessly, physically, and through the echo of the whistle.

That style has drawn some heat lately, most recently from Cleveland Browns defensive tackle Shelby Harris, who called Jennings out after their matchup. But inside the 49ers’ building, there’s no panic-just appreciation for a guy who brings an edge to every snap.

49ers general manager John Lynch, a hard-nosed player in his own right during his NFL days, knows a thing or two about walking the line between competitive fire and going too far. And from what he sees, Jennings is playing it the right way.

“Yeah, there’s a line [you don’t cross],” Lynch said Tuesday on KNBR’s Murph & Markus. “We’ve seen some terrible stuff-spitting and all that.

But Jauan never does that. I’m not out there, so I don’t know exactly what he says.

But there are people I trust who are, and I don’t think Jauan said anything [bad]. I can’t speak for Shelby Harris.”

What Lynch can speak to is Jennings’ effort-and it’s exactly what coaches love and defenders dread.

“Jauan plays incredibly hard and he plays through the echo of the whistle,” Lynch said. “That’s how I was taught to play. I understand that can be frustrating for opposing players because they’re not used to it.”

It’s a mentality that doesn’t always show up in the box score but makes a difference in the trenches, on contested catches, and in the run game-where Jennings often functions more like a tight end than a wideout, throwing his weight around and making defenders earn every yard.

In fact, Lynch likened Jennings’ impact to another Bay Area athlete known for his intensity and ability to stir the pot: Warriors forward Draymond Green.

“Draymond plays so hard that he’s an irritant. That’s very similar,” Lynch said.

“Jauan plays really hard to the whistle and frankly, we aren’t used to receivers doing that. He’s exceptionally strong, so he tosses these guys around.

It’s a great thing that he’s on our side.”

And while the comparison to Green might raise eyebrows-especially given Draymond’s long history of technical fouls and suspensions-Lynch made it clear that Jennings’ edge comes from effort, not crossing lines.

“I don’t believe that he crosses the line with the things he says out there,” Lynch added. “I think he just gets under people’s skin because he plays a certain way. I can tell you this: they all wish he was on their team, so we love having him on ours.”

Jennings’ physicality and attitude have come into focus over the last couple of weeks, with dust-ups involving Carolina Panthers safety Tre’von Moehrig and then the comments from Harris. But for the 49ers, it’s part of what makes him valuable. He’s not just a receiver-he’s a tone-setter.

In a locker room full of stars, Jennings brings something different. He’s the guy who does the dirty work, who blocks like a lineman and competes like a linebacker. And sometimes, that means ruffling feathers.

But if you ask the 49ers, that’s a trade they’ll take every time.
