Alfred Collins may be the quietest name from the San Francisco 49ers’ 2025 draft, but he’s also the one who could end up mattering the most.
That’s the case Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report made, pointing to a defensive front that has plenty of moving parts and one second-year lineman who suddenly looks like the safest bet in the group. In a year full of uncertainty up front, Collins’ steadiness could carry more weight than anyone expected.
It’s not hard to see why he’s been overlooked. Collins entered the league as the kind of prospect you could pretty much define in one sentence: stop the run, use the frame, play with leverage.
The size and strength were always going to play, and they did right away. He stepped in as a strong run defender from the jump.
What didn’t come with him was much pass-rush production, and that was part of why he slid to round 2. That showed up again in his rookie season, when he finished with just one sack.
That kind of first year can make a player feel pretty easy to file away. But the 49ers need more than a label here, and they may need Collins to provide exactly what he already does best while giving them a little more on top of it.
The reason is simple: the edge room is full of questions. Nick Bosa and Mykel Williams are both returning from ACL injuries.
Bosa is an aging veteran, and there’s no guarantee what version of him comes back. Williams, meanwhile, was a rookie who wasn’t flashing before he tore his ACL.
That leaves both starting edge spots wrapped in uncertainty. Osa Odighizuwa should be a known commodity in some ways, but he’s also new to the team, new to the scheme, and new to everything that comes with that transition. There’s going to be an adjustment there too.
So while others are dealing with health questions or a learning curve, Collins has become the clearest source of stability on the line heading into the season.
And that stability matters because the fit could help everyone around him. Collins’ run defense paired with Odighizuwa’s pass-rush explosiveness could let both players play to their strengths without being stretched into roles that don’t suit them.
If Collins takes another step, the 49ers’ line has a real chance to become one of the NFL’s most improved units.

49ers Suddenly Feel Closer To The Pass Rush Move Fans Want
The 49ers pass rush has been a talking point all offseason, and the conversation only gets louder when injuries start thinning out the edge rotation. With key players working back from torn ACLs and the possibility that Nick Bosa could be ready for Week 1, San Francisco still has reason to think about adding more help up front rather than waiting to see how the group holds together.
One analyst has pushed the idea even further, suggesting the 49ers could swing big if the right opportunity opens up. The logic is easy to follow for a team that has long valued pressure off the edge, especially with a star defender who nearly changed teams once already before a deal fell apart over medical concerns. For now, it remains speculation, but it is the kind of speculation that tends to linger around a team like this until the front office makes its next move. [Read more 🡒]
Brock Purdy Faces The 49ers Season That Could Change Everything
Brock Purdy is heading into the 2026 season in a familiar spot for a quarterback who has already won plenty of games in San Francisco: productive, scrutinized and still battling the label of being a system quarterback. With his rookie contract behind him, the conversation around Purdy is no longer just about whether he can run the offense. It is about whether he can change the way the league talks about him.
One Bleacher Report writer has even pushed Purdy into the dark-horse MVP conversation, a sign of how much belief there is in the 49ers' offensive setup heading into the year. The case rests on a deeper cast around him and the idea that a big season could finally shift the debate, especially if San Francisco pairs individual production with the kind of team success that turns skepticism into something harder to repeat. 49ers May Have A Very Different Answer At Edge Than Fans Expected
The 49ers are still sorting out what their edge-rusher plan will look like for 2026, and one veteran name has surfaced as a possible fit. Jadeveon Clowney brings the kind of size, versatility and recent production that keeps him in the conversation, with 23.5 sacks over his last three NFL seasons and 8.5 more last year in Dallas.
There is still plenty of caution attached to the idea, though, because any move here would be based as much on projection as on certainty. Clowney has been productive, but there are real questions about whether he can keep that level going for another full season, which is why the 49ers are weighing the possibility carefully rather than treating it like a sure thing.
