John Lynch didn’t close the door on Mike Evans playing Sunday, even after the wide receiver sat out Wednesday with a rib injury.
Speaking Thursday morning on KNBR, the 49ers general manager said Evans’ makeup gives him a real chance to push through it.
“I will tell you this: Mike Evans, part of the whole package, when I talk to people like Ronde Barber, my old friend who’s stayed really close with the Bucs, once we got him, I think one of the things Ronde said first was, ‘That’s a tough SOB. And I think we’ve already seen that with Mike. You know, he is old school in his mindset, and he doesn’t want to miss.”
Evans was hurt this past Sunday and looked to be in significant pain when he went down during San Francisco’s Week 3 win over the Arizona Cardinals. Even so, Lynch said the team will give him time and let the week play out.
“And so, we’ll always do what’s right for our player and all that stuff, but Mike’s going to make every attempt to try to play, and we’ll see where that goes. It’s still Thursday, and a couple more days before we kick off. He’s dealing with that, and we’ll see if he can get there by Sunday.”
The receiver situation could get thin fast. Evans wasn’t the only wideout absent from Wednesday’s practice, and KhaDarel Hodge also showed up on the injury report with a knee issue, which helps explain why Dante Pettis was added to the practice squad.
If the group looks compromised again this weekend, the 49ers’ receiving options against the best secondary they’ve faced so far could include Deebo Samuel, Jacob Cowing, Jordan Watkins, Brandin Cooks, and Pettis.
There was also an update on Nick Bosa, and it doesn’t sound like the star pass rusher is on track to return this week.
Bosa pulled his calf in practice last week and missed Week 3, but San Francisco left him off Injured Reserve, a sign they believed the absence could be relatively short. Lynch, though, said it will likely take at least one more week.
“I think Nick’s doing well. He’s working diligently.
I mean, it was just like a week ago today when that happened. And so, he’s worked really hard, and he’ll likely be out this week, and then we’ll go from there.
And we’ll look forward to the time when we have Nick back.”
Romello Height was limited on Wednesday, and the 49ers would welcome him back, especially if Keion White’s hamstring injury keeps him out. White was working on the side of the field, which leaves the door open for a Week 4 contribution.
Lynch made it clear San Francisco won’t force Bosa back before he’s ready.
“But when we bring him back, we’ve got to make sure he’s right on all counts, and he’ll work his tail off until he can get back out there. I think he’s working through it, and when he’s right, we’ll have him back out there.
I’m not trying to be vague. Calf injuries are sometimes murky.”
For now, the mission stays the same: keep winning while Bosa heals. A 3-0 start helps.
Seattle losing in Week 3 helps too. But the NFL rarely stays tidy for long, and the 49ers still have to navigate the next stretch without one of their most important defenders.

Tom Bradys Latest Rankings Set Up A Chiefs Debate
Tom Bradys latest FOX Sports power rankings landed after Week 3 and gave the 49ers another bit of national validation for their 3-0 start. He bumped San Francisco all the way to No. 1, while the Seahawks slid to No. 6 after taking their first loss, and he also singled out Brock Purdy for the way he has played through the opening stretch of the season.
The rest of Bradys list is what opens the door to the next debate, because he packed the Chiefs, Bills, Vikings and Raiders into the top five around San Francisco. With Kansas City still part of the conversation and the top of the board already stirring discussion, the 49ers now find themselves at the center of an early-season argument about which contender truly deserves the highest spot. 49ers Fans Just Got Wild Broncos Fuel Before This Matchup
With the 49ers set to face the Broncos, a recent radio segment out of Denver offered San Francisco fans a little extra bulletin-board material. Hosts Josh Dover and Cecil Lammey weighed Brock Purdy against Bo Nix and came down on the side of the Broncos rookie, pointing to Nixs fourth-quarter comebacks as the main reason they liked him better heading into the matchup.
The conversation did not stop at quarterback. Dover and Lammey also gave Sean Payton the edge over Kyle Shanahan, leaning on Paytons Super Bowl ring and broader coaching rsum. It is the kind of talk that can sharpen a game like this, especially when the evidence on the field may not line up with the confidence behind the mic. [Read more 🡒]
Kyle Shanahan Reignites A 49ers Officiating Debate Fans Know Too Well
Pass interference has been back in the conversation around the 49ers, and not in a way anyone in Santa Clara enjoys. Recent controversial calls around the league involving the Cardinals, Rams and Broncos only added fuel to an argument San Francisco fans know well, especially with Kyle Shanahan weighing in on the NFLs old experiment with challenging defensive pass interference. Shanahan said he no longer supports that rule, pointing to how it affected the flow of games when the league tried it.
For the 49ers, the frustration is part of a familiar pattern under Shanahan. San Francisco has spent plenty of time on the wrong side of officiating debates during his tenure, and a recent unnecessary roughness penalty on Fred Warner only kept that irritation simmering. Even when the play itself is over, the discussion around the whistle rarely is, which is why Shanahans latest comments landed with so many 49ers followers. [Read more 🡒]
