49ers Face A Real Test As Unbeaten Start Meets Broncos Defense

In a clash of conference titans, the Broncos aim to defy the odds against the unbeaten 49ers, with experts weighing in on betting prospects and key matchups.

The 49ers-Broncos matchup in Week 4 has all the ingredients of a game bettors will circle early and sweat late. San Francisco is unbeaten, Denver is coming off a statement win over the Rams, and the number has already started to move after Sunday night’s result.

The 49ers opened as 3-point favorites and are still sitting there, though the market has nudged a little toward Denver after the Broncos beat Los Angeles. The total has also climbed, jumping from 45.5 to 47.5. That’s a meaningful shift for a game that already had plenty of attention.

On paper, San Francisco has been the cleaner machine through three weeks. The 49ers are 3-0 after beating the Rams, Dolphins and Cardinals, and Brock Purdy has helped power an offense that sits No. 1 in EPA/Play.

They’re also first in Net Yards per Play at +2.5 and first in success rate. The caveat is that two of those wins came against Miami and Arizona, which matters when you start asking how much of that dominance is opponent-driven.

Denver, meanwhile, is not exactly walking into Levi’s Stadium as a push-over. The Broncos have won two straight since their Week 1 loss to Kansas City, and Bo Nix has made a habit of dragging his team back into games.

Denver’s offense still hasn’t matched San Francisco’s level, but the Broncos have shown real resistance. They’re 10th in EPA/Pass despite facing Patrick Mahomes, Trevor Lawrence and Matthew Stafford over the first three weeks.

That said, the numbers on the Broncos aren’t all flattering. They’re 25th in Net Yards per Play at -0.6, and Nix ranks 26th in adjusted EPA per play and 27th in completion percentage over expected. Even so, there’s a case to be made that this team is better than its overall profile suggests.

The other side of the ball is where this gets interesting. San Francisco’s defense has some questions attached to it right now, especially without Bosa and potentially Dre Greenlaw.

The 49ers are only 19th in success rate and 15th in EPA/Play, which is a little shaky considering the quality of offenses they’ve seen so far. Denver, by comparison, has been tested by tougher quarterback play than Miami or Arizona could offer.

That’s why there’s disagreement on the spread. Iain MacMillan is taking the 49ers to cover in his Road to 272 column, while the other side of the handicap sees value in Denver staying inside the number, even if San Francisco still wins. Arizona’s backdoor cover against the 49ers in Week 3 is part of that argument, along with Denver’s refusal to fold when it gets behind.

If the Broncos can create enough pressure on a defense that has some missing pieces, this one could stay live into the final possession. The 49ers may be the safer pick to win at home, but the spread and total both suggest a game with plenty of room for drama.

49ers Face A Mac Jones Decision Fans Cant Ignore

The 49ers have been getting calls on Mac Jones, but the buzz around the backup quarterback is not changing the teams view of him. ESPNs Dan Graziano reported that San Francisco sees Jones as important insurance behind Brock Purdy, which helps explain why the club is expected to keep him rather than move him before the NFL trade deadline.

San Francisco has reportedly heard from multiple teams, but the asking price remains steep enough that a deal may not come together. Jones value to the 49ers is rooted in what he already showed in a starting role last season, when he filled in for eight games and helped the team go 5-3, giving the front office a reason to treat him as more than just a spare arm. 49ers Week 4 Outlook Suddenly Hinges On One Late Decision

A late rib injury has turned Mike Evans into one of the biggest pregame variables on the 49ers Week 4 radar, with the veteran wide receiver now listed as questionable for Sundays matchup against the Denver Broncos. Evans was hurt in Week 3 and is being treated as a game-time decision, leaving San Francisco to wait until roughly 90 minutes before kickoff for the official word.

Evans has made it clear he wants to suit up, and his history of playing through similar injuries only adds to the uncertainty around how much the 49ers can count on him. For a team trying to keep its offense on schedule against a Broncos defense that can make every possession matter, his availability could shape the way San Francisco approaches the game from the opening drive on. 49ers Linked To A Draft Back For Life After Christian McCaffrey

Jahiem Whites 2026 season at North Texas has put him on the radar as a potential mid-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft, and the skill set is easy to see for a team like the 49ers. He has flashed the kind of elusiveness, vision and burst that tend to play well in San Franciscos offense, especially for a back who can create with the ball in his hands and keep defenses honest on the perimeter.

For the 49ers, the appeal is less about asking White to carry a heavy weekly load and more about the idea of a change-of-pace runner who fits alongside bigger personnel decisions at the position. His profile suggests a player who can complement a more physical inside option, which makes him the kind of draft name worth tracking as the process moves forward. [Read more 🡒]
