The 49ers are walking into Week 7 with a spotless record and a chance to make it seven straight, but this trip to Atlanta comes with a pile of baggage. On paper, it’s a game they should be able to handle. In reality, there are enough hits working against San Francisco to make this look like the week the unbeaten run ends.
The biggest issue is the setup around the game itself. Atlanta has the edge in rest, since the Falcons get an extra day while the 49ers are coming off a Monday night matchup.
That was a game that went down to the wire and forced the defense to stay on the field plenty, which means San Francisco is dealing with back-to-back weeks of heavy defensive snaps. Add in the travel and the East Coast kickoff, with the 49ers’ bodies effectively dealing with a 10 a.m.
PST start, and this has all the makings of a slow opening or a flat finish.
The receiver situation only makes it tougher. Mike Evans is out with an Achilles injury he aggravated last week, which takes away Brock Purdy’s most dependable option. San Francisco was already shorthanded at the position with Deebo Samuel dealing with a hamstring injury, Demarcus Robinson out with an ankle injury, and rookie De’Zhaun Stribling sidelined by an ankle injury as well.
That leaves Purdy relying on Jacob Cowing, Jordan Watkins, and Brandin Cooks, who just got to the team the other week. George Kittle and Christian McCaffrey are still there, so it’s not a bare cupboard, but this is still a wideout group that puts more pressure on Purdy to carry the offense.
And that’s really the challenge here. This game asks Purdy to live up to the MVP talk by protecting the ball, creating when the play breaks down, and making the players around him better. That’s a big ask in a difficult road spot.
There’s also the matter of Raheem Morris. This has the feel of a revenge game, and Morris will be looking to make his old team pay.
He may talk it down, but the motivation is obvious. For the 49ers, that means the defense is going to need turnovers to help tilt things back in their favor.
If they don’t get those takeaways, the game has every chance to stay tight. Given what San Francisco has already dealt with lately, plus the rest and travel edge in Atlanta’s favor, that’s enough to point toward an upset.
None of this would sink the 49ers’ season. They’d still have the bye after this, and a loss here wouldn’t erase what they’ve built. They could take this one and still remain among the NFC’s top teams and near the top of their division.
The Falcons aren’t being framed as an elite opponent. But with so many things stacked against San Francisco, this still looks like the spot where the 49ers take their first loss.

Brock Purdy Made An Admission 49ers Fans Will Appreciate
Brock Purdy has spent the early part of the season giving 49ers fans plenty to feel good about, steering San Francisco to a 6-0 start while stacking up 1,460 passing yards, 14 touchdowns and just two interceptions. The second-year quarterback has also become a familiar face away from the field, picking up a lucrative Toyota endorsement in 2024 along with deals from Adidas, Alaska Airlines, Applebees and Buffalo Wild Wings.
Still, the growing profile has not exactly made him comfortable with the spotlight. Purdy said the commercial side of stardom still feels a little strange, even if he appreciates the support from family and friends watching him break through. For a quarterback already carrying the attention that comes with the 49ers unbeaten start, it is a reminder that the off-field adjustment can be its own kind of test. [Read more 🡒]
49ers Injuries Just Created A Huge Chance For Jordan Watkins
Achilles tendinitis has already started reshaping the 49ers receiver picture, and the timing could hardly be better for Jordan Watkins. With Mike Evans out of the lineup against Washington, San Francisco had to lean on its depth, and the second-year wideout suddenly found himself in line for a larger role as the offense looks for answers on the perimeter.
Watkins has yet to carve out much of a rsum, but opportunity is opportunity in this league, especially for a team trying to stay afloat through injuries. If he can turn extra snaps into real production, he could make this stretch matter beyond a temporary fill-in role, though the 49ers may keep looking for other help if the passing game stalls and healthier receivers start returning. 49ers May Have One Edge In A Tough Michael Penix Matchup
Raheem Morris should give the 49ers a valuable extra lens as they prepare for Michael Penix Jr. and the Falcons, simply because he knows the quarterback so well from his time as Atlantas head coach. Morris was part of the evaluation process that helped shape Penixs arrival in Atlanta, and he has remained a useful source on how the quarterback has developed since getting back to full health.
For San Francisco, that kind of background matters in a matchup that already looks tricky. Morris has followed Penix closely enough to understand what the Falcons believe they have in him, from his talent to the recent strides he has made since returning to the field. Whether that translates into a real edge on game day is another question, but it gives the 49ers a clearer view of the challenge in front of them. [Read more 🡒]
