49ers Eyeing Free Agent Reunion With Eddy Pieiro This Offseason

49ers eye long-term deal with standout kicker Eddy Pieiro as free agency looms, signaling strategic offseason moves.

The San Francisco 49ers face an intriguing offseason challenge, and it's not what you might expect. While fans usually focus on offensive and defensive strategies, this time it's all about kicker Eddy Piñiero, whose contract status is up in the air as he heads toward free agency on March 11.

General Manager John Lynch is keen to keep Piñiero in the Bay Area, aiming for a multi-year extension. Piñiero joined the 49ers before Week 2 of the 2025 season, stepping in after the team parted ways with Jake Moody, their 2023 third-round draft pick.

Lynch was full of praise for Piñiero, stating, “Eddy was obviously fantastic. We’ve got a couple weeks before free agency to continue to work towards something. The thing is, I don’t think the guy could have come in and done any better.”

Piñiero’s impact was undeniable, and his contributions haven't gone unnoticed. Star tight end George Kittle even showed his support by donning Piñiero’s jersey while watching the 49ers' playoff loss to the Seahawks, sidelined by an Achilles injury.

In a move to bolster their special teams unit, the 49ers have already secured long snapper Jon Weeks, a Pro Bowl honoree in 2025. The 40-year-old Weeks is a crucial part of the team’s consistency, and his return could be a persuasive factor in Piñiero’s decision.

Additionally, the 49ers are eyeing punter and holder Thomas Morestead for a return in 2026. Lynch mentioned, “I think Weeks is, I think I have it in my Docusign.

I think we are good there. Morestead, we’ve been in conversations with.

We’ll let you know when something happens there.”

As the clock ticks toward free agency, the 49ers are making strategic moves to keep their special teams solid, with Piñiero at the heart of their plans.
