After a resilient 2025 campaign that saw the 49ers outperform expectations despite a laundry list of injuries, San Francisco heads into the offseason with something it hasn’t had in a while: a little financial breathing room. Now comes the big question-how do GM John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan use that flexibility to keep this team in the Super Bowl conversation?
NBC Sports NFL analyst Chris Simms offered some insight into where the Niners might focus their efforts, and his take starts up front.
“They can make that O-line better,” Simms said. “And they need a big-time player on the offensive side.”
Let’s start with the offensive line. It’s no secret that the unit had its moments of inconsistency last season, and while it held up admirably under the circumstances, there’s room for improvement-especially with Trent Williams turning 38 before next season kicks off.
Williams is still playing at a high level, but the clock is ticking. Whether it’s finding his eventual successor or simply adding depth to protect against future injuries, bolstering the trenches should be high on the to-do list.
Then there’s the matter of adding another offensive weapon. Christian McCaffrey has been the heartbeat of this offense, but as Simms pointed out, the Niners may be entering the back half of his prime. That doesn’t mean he’s done-not by a long shot-but it does mean the team should be proactive about surrounding quarterback Brock Purdy with more firepower.
Receiver is one area to watch closely. Brandon Aiyuk’s future with the team remains uncertain, and if he’s not back, that leaves a significant hole in the passing game.
Fortunately for San Francisco, the upcoming draft class is loaded with wide receiver talent. If Lynch and Shanahan want to go the veteran route, there are also intriguing names potentially available via trade or free agency.
One name that’s been floated? A.J.
Brown, the star wideout in Philadelphia, who has reportedly grown frustrated with his situation. Whether that’s a realistic option or not, the point remains: the Niners could use another big-time playmaker to keep Shanahan’s offense humming.
On the defensive side of the ball, some have suggested adding another edge rusher to complement Nick Bosa, but Simms doesn’t see that as an urgent need.
“They got some good, young defensive talent,” he said. “I think that it’ll be more just thinking about the future.”
Translation: the defense is in a solid spot right now, but don’t be surprised if the front office looks to draft and develop for the long haul rather than make a splashy move on that side of the ball.
The NFC West isn’t getting any easier. The Rams are retooling with purpose, and the Seahawks are always a tough out.
If the 49ers want to keep their seat at the top of the division, this offseason will be critical. With a bit of cap space, a strong draft class, and a clear understanding of where reinforcements are needed, Lynch and Shanahan have the tools to reload.
The question now is how bold they’re willing to be.
