The 49ers are reaching into Atlanta’s practice squad to patch a hole on the edge, signing Khalid Kareem as Sam Okuayinonu deals with a foot injury.
According to Greg Auman of Fox Sports, Kareem is headed to Melbourne, which points to him being available for Week 1. The timing matters because Okuayinonu was recently ruled out, forcing San Francisco to make a move.
In a lot of ways, this is a clean swap on the depth chart. Kareem checks in at 6-foot-4 and 268 pounds, while Okuayinonu is listed at 6-foot-1 and 269 pounds.
Kareem also entered the league with physical traits that stood out: his arm length ranked in the 83rd percentile and his hands in the 95th percentile. With that profile, Raheem Morris will likely lean on him for run disruption in a role similar to what Okuayinonu provides when healthy.
Kareem’s NFL résumé is still pretty thin, even though he was a fifth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Since 2022, he has logged fewer than 200 snaps. Last season, he played in four games and never got above 26 snaps in any one game.
There is at least some recent evidence of what he can do. Kareem recorded four stops in 31 snaps on the edge last season, along with five quarterback pressures. One of those stops and one of those pressures came against the Rams in Week 17, which gives San Francisco a little more certainty about how he might handle Sean McVay’s offense.
This may not be the only adjustment the 49ers make before Week 1. Romello Height’s ankle injury could still affect the roster picture, and these injuries are putting more on Nick Bosa and Keion White’s shoulders.
The 49ers also added Kevin Givens to the practice squad, and he could be activated on game day to help on the edge and add a bigger body against the Rams’ heavy personnel looks. Robert Saleh used Givens in that kind of spot at times last season when the team was short-handed up front.
San Francisco has not announced a corresponding move yet. If Okuayinonu’s injury turns out to be serious, the 49ers could place him on injured reserve.
