The 49ers-Eagles matchup has already given us one sideline fight that people still remember, and now the possibility of a second Greenlaw-Big Dom showdown might be slipping away before it ever happens.
San Francisco brought back Dre Greenlaw this offseason, and that immediately put Week 17 against Philadelphia on the radar. That game already carried baggage because the 49ers knocked the Eagles out of the playoffs last season, a reversal that followed the infamous NFC Championship game when Brock Purdy got hurt and San Francisco got pummeled.
But the moment that really stuck was the regular-season meeting that turned into a sideline scrap between Greenlaw and Eagles head of security Dom DiSandro, better known as “Big Dom.”
It started after Greenlaw delivered a big hit on DeVonta Smith. DiSandro stepped in and put his hands on Greenlaw, and Greenlaw answered by throwing his fist toward DiSandro’s face.
Both men were ejected, though the fallout clearly hit one team harder than the other. San Francisco lost Greenlaw, a key defensive piece; Philadelphia lost the man on the sideline who acts as Nick Sirianni’s emotional support.
The 49ers still took over the game from there and rolled to a win that effectively ended Philly’s season. And now the strange part: the sequel may not happen.
Former NFL player Emmanuel Acho recently said on a podcast that when he was playing, he rear-ended a car and called his team’s head of security, who told him he would send another police officer to the scene. According to Acho, that officer would then blame the other driver.
Acho did not name the team or the security chief, but he did play for the Eagles, which led plenty of people to connect the dots to DiSandro. Now, the NFL is reportedly investigating DiSandro based on Acho’s comments.
If that investigation leads to a suspension, the Greenlaw-DiSandro reunion could disappear from the schedule.
And maybe that’s fine. The two sides already have enough heat without another public run-in to stir things up. Even so, this is the kind of storyline that will keep hanging around as long as Greenlaw and “Big Dom” are tied to the same history.
