The 49ers’ preseason opener didn’t count in the standings, but it still offered a clear look at where things got messy in a 19-13 loss to the Titans on Thursday night at Levi’s Stadium.
Tennessee played most of its starters for two quarters. San Francisco mostly kept its regulars on the sideline, which meant the spotlight shifted to the depth chart and a handful of players trying to make a case. For some of them, it was a rough audition.
The left guard battle didn’t help itself. Robert Jones lined up on the left, with Connor Colby starting on the right, and neither one had much to brag about in pass protection or in the run game.
The competition for that spot has been going on for a while, and Thursday didn’t make the answer any clearer. If anything, it suggested San Francisco may need to look hard at upgrading the position.
Patrick Taylor Jr. also had a night to forget. No 49ers running back stood out much, but Taylor was the least effective of the group, finishing with -5 yards on five carries and a long run of just one yard. The broadcast said he has a strong chance to make the roster, though if that happens, it sounds like it’ll be because of what he does on special teams.
Romello Height didn’t make much noise either. The 49ers used the 70th pick in the 2026 NFL draft on the defensive end, and this looked like his first real NFL game action.
But with other rookies showing more, Height was largely a nonfactor in his limited snaps. San Francisco needs pass rush help this season, so there was a real chance for him to flash.
Instead, he mostly blended into the background.
The center snaps were another problem area. Drake Nugent and Doug Kramer Jr. stepped in for Jake Brendel, and the exchange between center and quarterback was shaky more than once.
Some snaps sailed off target and led to fumbles or plays getting out of rhythm, while others seemed to arrive before the quarterback was ready. That kind of issue can’t hang around once the games start to matter.
