The 49ers are heading into next Monday night without one of their most aggressive defenders after Dre Greenlaw was suspended for one game by the NFL on Monday following his headbutt of Seahawks linebacker Ernest Jones IV in Seattle.
The league ruled that Greenlaw’s hit on Jones - who did not have a helmet on at the time - crossed the line during San Francisco’s 32-29 win over Seattle. Greenlaw is expected to appeal, though the video from the play doesn’t seem likely to make his case easier.
It all happened quickly. Sam Darnold scrambled toward the Seattle sideline and went out of bounds near midfield, and Greenlaw arrived just a moment late. The unnecessary roughness flag came out right away, and Seahawks players rushed in.
Jones reached Greenlaw first, and the two met face-to-face after Jones appeared to push at Greenlaw’s facemask. Greenlaw answered by driving his helmet into Jones’ bare head. Jones left the incident bleeding, while Greenlaw headed to the locker room.
The NFL said the ejection came through its officiating command center in New York under a newer rule that allows plays to be reviewed for ejections even when there isn’t a field flag for that exact action. The suspension was later tied to the league’s sportsmanship rule, with officials noting that Greenlaw used his helmet against an unprotected opponent.
If the appeal does not change anything, Greenlaw will miss the Commanders game next Monday night and will be eligible to return on October 20.
That’s a real loss for San Francisco. Greenlaw is second on the team with 37 tackles in his return to the 49ers after a one-year stop in Denver.
For the 49ers, the toughest part is that this isn’t unfamiliar territory. Sunday was Greenlaw’s third career ejection and second suspension.
He was ejected in 2022 against the Chargers for a hit on Justin Herbert. The next year in Philadelphia, he was tossed after his sideline confrontation with Eagles security chief Dom DiSandro. Then last October in Denver, he was suspended for one game after chasing referee Brad Allen and threatening him following the Broncos’ wild comeback against the Giants.
No one in Santa Clara wants Greenlaw to stop bringing his physical edge, which is a big part of why Kyle Shanahan’s defense wanted him back. But there’s a clear line between playing with force and going too far, and Greenlaw keeps finding himself on the wrong side of it in ways that hurt the team.
The 49ers survived Sunday’s chaos and escaped with a narrow division win. Against Washington, they’ll have to show they can do it again without Greenlaw on the field.

49ers Fans Had Every Reason To Watch Seattles Brutal Late Call
A playoff finish in Seattle had plenty of 49ers fans glued to the screen, and not just because of the rivalry. On a crucial fourth-and-10 catch by Cooper Kupp, the officials ruled him short of the first-down marker, and even after a replay review the call stayed on the field. The sequence had the kind of tension that makes every angle matter, with the spot and the sideline both under scrutiny in real time.
For San Francisco followers, the intrigue was in how the moment was handled and what it meant in the bigger picture of a high-stakes postseason game. Seattle was left needing just one more answer on a night where the margin was already razor thin, and the outcome only added to the sense that one late ruling had carried enormous weight in a 32-29 finish. 49ers Survived A Wild Finish That Says Plenty About Brock Purdy
For much of Sunday, the 49ers and Seahawks traded punches in a game that never quite settled into one rhythm, with turnovers, field goals and quick-strike scores giving it the feel of a divisional roller coaster. Brock Purdy had his fingerprints on plenty of the important moments, navigating a messy afternoon and helping keep San Francisco in position as the lead changed hands and the tension built late.
The final stretch brought even more chaos, with the 49ers suddenly facing the kind of pressure that can expose every flaw in a close game. San Francisco had to answer after a brutal sequence that left it scrambling to recover momentum, and Purdys response only sharpened the conversation around how much he can carry when a game turns frantic. Mike Evans Just Gave 49ers Fans A New Reason To Believe
Mike Evans is already giving the 49ers the kind of presence they hoped for when they brought him in on a three-year deal in March. Against the Seahawks, he was a steady problem all game, working his way to big gains and helping San Francisco stay on the front foot with a touchdown and a two-point conversion among his key contributions.
The more memorable moment came when Evans got into a brief trash-talking exchange with Seahawks cornerback Trevon Diggs, a scene that made the broadcast rounds and added a little extra edge to an already physical game. Evans later said he did not realize who he was jawing with at first because of the helmet, a small detail that only added to the oddness of a chippy divisional matchup and the buzz surrounding his early impact in San Francisco.
