49ers Could Have A Post-Bye Playing Time Shakeup Soon

Despite a mild hamstring strain, Christian McCaffrey is expected to return, as the 49ers look to a brighter post-bye week lineup with several players potentially back in action.

One encouraging note came out of the 49ers’ Week 7 injury picture: Christian McCaffrey’s issue doesn’t sound severe.

McCaffrey exited with what was first called a thigh injury, but head coach Kyle Shanahan clarified that it is a mild hamstring strain. Shanahan said the team is “pretty optimistic” McCaffrey will be okay after the bye week.

He stopped short of promising a return, but Shanahan did say there are multiple injured players who could be back after the bye. The list is a long one: WR Mike Evans, WR Deebo Samuel, WR Demarcus Robinson, DE Nick Bosa, DT CJ West, S Marques Sigle, LB Garret Wallow, LB Luke Gifford, and CB Upton Stout.

At receiver, the 49ers could be looking at a noticeably different rotation when they face the Raiders. Evans still leads the group in snaps with 192, even though he has missed a game.

Samuel has missed two games and sits second on the team with 164 snaps. Robinson had been tied with Samuel for second-most snaps through the first two games, and that picture could shift now that Christian Kirk is in the mix and Jordan Watkins has already played.

That could leave Brandin Cooks out of the picture.

West is another name worth watching. He has been sidelined since Week 2, and even before that, the numbers hinted that his role wasn’t fully secure.

In Week 1, Gracen Halton was already playing more snaps than West, while James Thompson was just one snap behind him. West played more than Thompson in Week 2, but still trailed Halton and Osa Odighizuwa.

Going back to the preseason setup, West would have been expected to replace Sebastian Valdez. But Valdez has earned his spot with strong play, and it’s fair to say he may have already given the defense more than West would have if healthy.

Sigle’s injury also leaves a notable gap. Before going down, he was rotating with Malik Mustapha and sometimes Ji’Ayir Brown.

When he was on the field, the rookie errors that showed up a year ago weren’t there. Given what the 49ers ask from their safeties and the speed he adds, Mustapha and Sigle could be their best pairing.

49ers Enter Bye Week With A Defensive Surprise Fans Didn't See Coming

The bye week arrives with the 49ers still in a strong spot at 6-1, even after a recent loss, and the biggest reason has been a defense that has kept finding answers as the bodies have piled up. Injuries have forced San Francisco to lean on depth in a hurry, with absences affecting players such as Alfred Collins and CJ West, yet the unit has continued to hold its own and keep the team near the top of the standings.

What has made this stretch especially notable is how quickly some unexpected contributors have been pulled into meaningful roles. Odighizuwa has given the front a real boost, while Jaden Dugger and Gracen Halton have been asked to step in much earlier than anyone likely planned because of injuries and suspension-related gaps, and their emergence has helped soften the impact of all the moving parts. For a team trying to stay steady through the middle of the season, that kind of defensive depth could matter just as much as the record. [Read more 🡒]

49ers Enter Bye With A Chance To Come Back Even More Dangerous

The 49ers head into their midseason bye with a one-loss record and the sense that they have put themselves in a strong position early in the 2026 season. After a fast start, this week off arrives at a useful time, giving the coaching staff a chance to let injured players heal, take a harder look at what has worked, and sort through the little issues that tend to matter more as the schedule tightens.

San Francisco has been good enough to expect more from itself, which is usually the point at this stage of the year. The next stretch will be about turning that solid foundation into something even sharper, with the staff working to tighten consistency, execution and efficiency on both sides of the ball before the season resumes. 49ers Loss Still Revealed A Defensive Shift Fans Should Notice

The loss to Atlanta didnt erase what the 49ers have been building on defense, especially against the run. Even in defeat, San Francisco made one of the leagues most explosive backs work for everything, and that kind of resistance has become a theme as the season has gone on.

With the bye week here, the 49ers can turn their attention to offensive health while knowing their front has become a real asset. The run-stopping improvement is now showing up in the numbers, and it gives San Francisco a sturdy foundation to lean on when the schedule ramps back up. [Read more 🡒]
