The 49ers came out of the bye with a chance to start patching together a roster that’s been battered by injuries, and four familiar names were back on the practice field in limited fashion Wednesday.
The biggest one is Nick Bosa. He’s been sidelined since Week 2 with a calf injury and has now missed the last five games, but his return to practice is a strong sign the 49ers are at least moving toward getting their top edge rusher back soon.
The team may choose to bring him along carefully, but his limited work points to a Week 10 return at the latest. Bosa is listed as questionable for the game.
That matters even more with Mykel Williams also in the mix to keep developing. If Bosa is back and Williams keeps taking steps forward, the 49ers’ edge rusher room starts to look a lot better than it did earlier in the year.
San Francisco also opened the 21-day practice window for receiver Ricky Pearsall Robinson, which gives the team a clear path to getting him back within the next three weeks. Robinson had been placed on injured reserve with an ankle injury, and with De’Zhaun Stribling and Deebo Samuel out, the timing could hardly be better. Robinson is expected to return this week.
That would be a welcome lift for a receiver group that has been stretched thin.
The other two names to watch are in the secondary. Upton Stout Hobbs, who was signed by the Packers last offseason before being released after an injury-filled season, has barely practiced since joining the 49ers, but he was back in a limited role on Wednesday.
San Francisco cut Jack Jones last week, and that could open the door for rookie Ephesians Prysock to handle dime snaps. It could also mean the 49ers are hoping Hobbs can step into that role this week.
Then there’s Marques Sigle, who started at safety for the 49ers in the first four weeks before an ankle injury knocked him out. Malik Mustapha has played well in his absence, so the team has not seemed desperate to rush Sigle back. Still, he returned to practice in a limited capacity and should be back this week or next.
The bigger question there is how the 49ers plan to use him. Sigle could replace Mustapha, or the team could decide to bench Ji’Ayir Brown instead. That call could come this week.

George Kittle Is Still Chasing More 49ers History
George Kittle is heading into his 10th season with the 49ers, and the rsum keeps getting longer. Drafted in 2017, he has already carved out a place in franchise history, and the latest milestone only adds to the sense that he is still building something special in San Francisco.
Even after working his way back from an Achilles injury, Kittle has remained one of the offenses most reliable playmakers, and he has said he wants to spend his entire career with the 49ers. For a player who has already passed one major franchise mark, the question now is how much more history he can stack before this run is over. [Read more 🡒]
49ers Could Still Make One Deadline Swing Fans Never Saw Coming
With the NFL trade deadline drawing near, the 49ers are once again in the familiar position of being linked to help rather than just waiting to see what the market does. The conversation around San Francisco has centered on possible upgrades from around the league, with the idea being simple enough: if there is a way to strengthen the roster before the stretch run, the 49ers will at least be in the mix.
The names being tossed around reflect the range of possibilities, from defensive help to offensive depth and even a familiar edge presence. Nothing is official, and this is still firmly in the speculative stage, but the fact that San Francisco can be mentioned in the same breath as so many different types of targets says plenty about where the team stands as the deadline approaches. 49ers Have A Familiar Edge In The NFCs Biggest Race
The 49ers have built a habit of showing up when the calendar turns serious, and that matters again as the NFC race tightens. Since 2022, their November and December regular-season work has generally been a strength, with the kind of late-season consistency that has helped keep them in the hunt for the conferences top seed.
San Francisco has also tended to come out of the bye ready to play, which only adds to the sense that this team knows how to navigate the stretch run. The upcoming schedule still has to be played, but the 49ers enter it with a familiar edge and a recent track record that makes them look well positioned to keep control of the No. 1-seed chase.
