The Raiders may have to navigate Sunday’s trip to San Francisco without Darien Porter, and that’s a problem that starts with health and quickly spills into the secondary.
Porter was not on the field at the start of Wednesday’s practice because of a groin injury, according to ESPN’s Ryan McFadden. That alone doesn’t lock in his status for the 49ers game, but it does put another question mark in front of a defense that already had its hands full against the Jets.
Porter left last week’s game against New York after hurting his groin on the opening play and never came back, Bill Williamson reported for Silver and Black Pride. When he exited, rookie corners Jermod McCoy and Hezekiah Masses rotated in, and Williamson pointed to them as the most likely options again if Porter can’t go Sunday.
The Raiders selected Porter out of Iowa State in the third round of the 2025 draft, No. 68 overall. Through Week 8, he had 19 tackles, including 14 solo stops, and five passes defensed in six games. He also appeared in all 17 games as a rookie and made 10 starts.
McCoy, whom Las Vegas took out of Tennessee with the first pick of the fourth round, No. 101 overall, in April, and Masses, a fifth-round pick from California at No. 175, could be asked to step into bigger roles if Porter remains sidelined.
Las Vegas did get one defensive piece back Wednesday: defensive tackle Tonka Hemingway returned after dealing with a stinger against New York, McFadden reported. Wide receiver Cody White was not seen at practice.
The Raiders are coming off a 38-33 win over the Jets, a game that snapped a four-game losing streak. But the defense had to survive plenty of stress along the way, including New York scoring on its first six possessions.
That wasn’t the only issue. Running back Braelon Allen piled up 121 yards on 18 carries before halftime as the Jets went ahead 23-14.
Las Vegas answered in the second half and erased a nine-point deficit. The finish came down to one final play, with safety Jeremy Chinn intercepting Geno Smith’s pass into the end zone with seven seconds left to seal the Raiders’ 13th takeaway of the season.
Now at 4-4, Las Vegas heads to Levi’s Stadium to face the 6-1 49ers on Sunday.

Ravens Just Changed The Pressure Around A Possible Mac Jones Trade
The market around Mac Jones has been a talking point for the 49ers, but any move would have to bring back a meaningful return for San Francisco to even consider it. With the quarterback picture still unsettled, the idea of a deal has lingered more as a possibility than a plan, and the 49ers are operating with a short window to sort out what comes next.
Baltimores latest direction only adds another layer to the conversation, because the Ravens are now looking elsewhere to address their quarterback need. That takes one potential landing spot off the board and makes a Jones trade look even less likely unless the situation changes in a major way, leaving San Francisco to weigh its options with the clock ticking. 49ers Face A Costly Trade Temptation They May Need To Resist
After Week 8, the 49ers are being linked to the kind of trade ideas that always sound better in October than they do in March. The names floating around are Brian Thomas Jr. and Khalil Mack, two players who would bring immediate attention and a clear talent boost, but also two players whose price tags would force San Francisco to think hard about how much it wants to spend for help that is not guaranteed to solve everything.
The appeal is obvious for a team trying to stay aggressive, yet the risk is just as clear. Thomas would require a much bigger investment than a late-round flier, while Macks market no longer looks like the sort of deal that should cost premium draft capital. For a front office that has to balance urgency with long-term roster health, this is the kind of temptation that can drain value fast if the 49ers decide the wrong player is worth the wrong pick. 49ers Must Decide How The Brandon Aiyuk Standoff Finally Ends
Brandon Aiyuks long-running standoff with the 49ers is heading toward another checkpoint, with the receiver seeking reinstatement from the reserve list and preparing to report back to the teams facility. It is the latest sign that the situation is moving again after a stretch of uncertainty, and it puts San Francisco back in the familiar position of trying to sort out one of its most complicated roster issues.
For the 49ers, though, a return to the building does not automatically mean a clean ending. Kyle Shanahan has made it clear the team is operating as if the matter will not be settled right away, which leaves San Francisco weighing its next move with the trade deadline looming. Whether the answer becomes a release, a trade or some kind of reintegration, the club still has to decide how this finally closes. [Read more 🡒]
