49ers Could Cash In As Mac Jones Draws Contender Interest

As the NFL trade deadline looms, Mac Jones emerges as a key target for the Vikings, Ravens, and Eagles, each seeking a QB boost to elevate their seasons.

As the NFL trade deadline draws closer, the chatter around Mac Jones is heating up again, and the 49ers could have a real market forming. Three teams are starting to look like the most plausible landing spots: the Vikings, Ravens and Eagles.

Minnesota’s situation is the most urgent. The Vikings enter Week 9 at 6-1, but that record comes with a catch: they’re being carried by the league’s best defense and an offense that has lagged behind.

With Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison on the roster, there’s enough talent to score points, but the source of the problem is Kyler Murray. The NFC North is so compressed that the last-place team is already 5-3, which means Minnesota could slide from unbeaten to buried in the division if the offense doesn’t stabilize.

Jones would give them a chance to lean on the weapons and run game they already have, and that kind of urgency could push the price higher than the 49ers would normally want.

Baltimore is dealing with a different kind of mess. Lamar Jackson is expected to go on IR because of a thumb injury, Tyler Huntley was hurt in Week 8, and the Ravens are down to rookie UDFA Joey Fagano.

At 4-4, they’re already in last place in their division and need a turnaround fast. There’s also a bigger-picture angle here: Jackson has just one year left on his deal, carries a high cap hit, and the Ravens may be forced to choose between extending him or moving on after this season.

With a new coaching staff in place and Jackson’s injury history, the team could decide this is the year to start thinking ahead. If Jones helps keep Baltimore in the mix, he could wind up being their 2027 starter.

Philadelphia is the other club that makes sense as a forward-looking play. Jalen Hurts is out for the year with blood clots, and there’s no clear timeline for his return.

The Eagles have already seen enough of Tanner McKee to know he isn’t the long-term answer. Jones would give them a chance to use the rest of the season as an audition, with the idea that he could earn a shot at 2027.

And with the division looking weak, the logic of making that move only gets stronger.

49ers May Be Leaving Brock Purdy Too Much To Overcome

Brock Purdys season had put him in the thick of the MVP conversation for a reason. He had been playing at a high level for San Francisco, and even after the 49ers traded for defensive tackle DeForest Buckner, the focus around the roster has stayed on whether the team has done enough to keep its quarterback in position to sustain that kind of production.

A rough outing against the Falcons only sharpened that question, because the 49ers have not made additional major moves to upgrade the receiving group around him. The concern now is less about whether Purdy can bounce back and more about whether San Francisco has given him enough help to keep matching the standard he set earlier in the season. [Read more 🡒]

Fred Warner Is Giving The 49ers A New Defensive Identity

Through seven weeks, Fred Warner has been the steady center of a 49ers defense that has had to keep adjusting around injuries and roster turnover. Even with the changes, San Francisco has stayed among the leagues better units, sitting seventh in points allowed and fourth in yards allowed, and Warners all-around impact has been a big reason why the group has held its edge.

He has been the teams tackling leader and has also created takeaways at a pace that gives the defense a different kind of bite. The numbers only tell part of it, though, because Warners presence has helped shape how the 49ers are playing on that side of the ball now, and the bigger question is how far this version of the defense can carry them as the season moves deeper into the stretch. Former 49ers Pick Resurfaces For All The Wrong Reasons

Joe Williams, the former 49ers running back drafted in 2017, resurfaced this week in West Hollywood after allegedly fleeing from Los Angeles County Sheriffs deputies. Williams, who once arrived in San Francisco with plenty of college-football intrigue behind him, was taken into custody after the incident and is now facing a string of charges that includes receiving stolen property, resisting arrest, vandalism, trespassing and a probation violation.

For the 49ers, it is another uncomfortable reminder of how quickly a promising draft story can fade from view. Williams never got the chance to make good on that selection in a regular-season game, and now his next court appearance is set for Nov. 2 as the legal process moves forward. [Read more 🡒]
