As ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported, Juszczyk was hit with a $14,926 penalty for what the NFL called an offensive demonstration. In the league’s words, “Your imitation of chugging a beer constituted an offensive demonstration and could reasonably be construed as being in poor taste,” according to the fine letter Schefter shared.
Schefter also said Juszczyk is appealing the fine. He added that the fullback has used the celebration throughout his career, and Juszczyk texted him back, “I don't even drink beer!”
That’s what makes this one stand out. The league is free to police conduct, but this is the sort of decision that invites eye rolls because it feels disconnected from common sense and from how celebrations are actually treated across the sport.
The NFL’s inconsistency has long been part of the conversation, and a 2018 Bleacher Report analysis highlighted just how uneven fines can be. It noted that despite a clear fine schedule, players are still hit with different amounts for the same infraction, and that more than 30 percent of fines in 2012 landed significantly outside the allotted schedule.
The same analysis also pointed out that some fine amounts don’t seem to line up neatly with the league’s player-safety emphasis, while major fines have often decreased since the schedule began. It also said the system appears to lean toward defensive players in both rule and enforcement.
Whether Juszczyk wins his appeal or not, the bigger issue is obvious: this is the NFL finding a problem where most fans would only see a celebration that fit the player and the moment.
