The 49ers are turning to a familiar veteran to help patch together a battered pass rush, with four-time Pro Bowl edge rusher Matthew Judon set to join their practice squad.
San Francisco confirmed the move after ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported it. Judon also spoke about the move before Fowler’s report, telling All32’s Arabia Tillery that he was set to sign with the 49ers.
”With all of the injuries piling up over there I think I can just come in and help until some of those guys get back,” Judon said.
The fit makes sense on multiple levels. Judon will reunite with defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, who coached him when Morris was the Atlanta Falcons head coach. Judon spent last season with Atlanta, where he posted 5.5 sacks in his lone year with the team.
His 2024 journey didn’t stop there. Judon played 13 games for the Miami Dolphins before being waived in December, then appeared in one game for the Buffalo Bills after signing to their practice squad.
Now 34, Judon arrives with a résumé that still carries weight. He made four straight Pro Bowls from 2019 through 2022 and had the kind of peak stretch that defined his rise in New England, putting up 12.5 sacks in 2021 and 15.5 in 2022 after leaving the Baltimore Ravens following five seasons there.
That production came in a different chapter of his career, but San Francisco doesn’t need him to be that exact player right away. The 49ers are thin off the edge with Nick Bosa sidelined by a calf injury and rookie Romello Height out with a broken hand, which kept him out of Sunday’s Week 3 win over the Miami Dolphins.
In their place, Keion White, Khalid Kareem and Ogbonnia Okoronkwo handled most of the edge work, while Viliami Fehoko logged 13 snaps in the victory.
