49ers Are Suddenly Tied To A Trade Fans Would Love

Could the 49ers' strategic maneuvering at the trade deadline secure them a transformational addition in All-Pro safety Jessie Bates, or will opposing interests from the Falcons stall any potential deal?

The San Francisco 49ers are widely expected to make another move before the trade deadline, and one name that has surfaced as a possible fit is Atlanta Falcons safety Jessie Bates, according to Bill Barnwell of ESPN.

Barnwell framed Bates as the kind of high-impact addition that could change a playoff game with one big moment, while also pointing out that he already knows Raheem Morris’ system.

“Finding one player who might be able to swing a playoff game with a big play could be a logical target for Lynch,” wrote Barnwell. “Jessie Bates III is a free agent after the season, and the 29-year-old safety has at least three interceptions in seven of his eight completed campaigns as a pro.

He just made one of the plays of the season last week against the Buccaneers, forcing a Bucky Irving fumble on an impromptu speed option for a touchback. Bates is also familiar with Raheem Morris' defense, having played under the 49ers' defensive coordinator in Atlanta during the 2024 and 2025 seasons.”

Bates earned second-team All-Pro honors last season with the Falcons under Morris.

Even so, there are real hurdles here. San Francisco already has Malik Mustapha, Marques Sigle, and Ji’Ayir Brown on the roster, but none of them is at Bates’ level. Brown is expected to hit free agency after the season, and the 49ers do not have extension plans for Mustapha or Sigle either.

That opens the door to a different kind of deal. San Francisco could send one of those younger safeties to Atlanta as part of the package. If the 49ers moved Mustapha or Sigle, they would be getting a player with more than this season of team control - a younger, cheaper option under contract longer than Bates.

The Falcons’ situation makes a trade tricky too. Atlanta sits at 3-5, but it is still very much alive in a weak NFC South. The Panthers are 3-4, the Buccaneers are 3-5, and the Saints are 2-5, so the Falcons are not in a position where they have to give up on the season.

Adding a safety back in the deal would help, but unless Atlanta drops again in Week 9 and the standings break against them, they may not be ready to sell. Bates looks like a dream target for the 49ers, but probably not a realistic one.

Brock Purdy Gets Real About A Brandon Aiyuk Reunion

Brock Purdy isnt carrying any hard feelings into the possibility of seeing Brandon Aiyuk again. The 49ers quarterback made it clear he still holds nothing but love and respect for the wideout, even after a long stretch apart, a sign that whatever has happened behind the scenes hasnt changed the personal side of the relationship.

Aiyuks situation remains one of the more interesting loose ends around San Francisco as the team moves forward. His future with the 49ers is still uncertain, but if he does show up around the facility, Purdys message suggests the door to a reunion would open with warmth rather than awkwardness. [Read more 🡒]

Brandon Aiyuk Situation Just Got Much Messier For The 49ers

Brandon Aiyuks next steps with the 49ers have become a lot more complicated as the sides sort through a contract issue that goes beyond the usual trade or release conversation. His agent said there are plans to meet with the team, but the situation now has the NFL Management Council and NFL Players Association involved as the two sides work through how his contract and roster status should be handled.

What makes this especially messy is that the process could still end in agreement or move to arbitration, leaving Aiyuks future in San Francisco unresolved for now. For a 49ers team that has already had to navigate plenty of offseason noise, the uncertainty around one of its most prominent players adds another layer to a situation that is clearly not close to being settled. 49ers Face Two Raiders Threats That Could Ruin A Post-Bye Reset

The 49ers come out of the bye with a clear defensive emphasis, and the timing is right after a stretch in which San Francisco has been looking for more consistency on that side of the ball. Adding DeForest Buckner would fit that broader push for sturdier play up front, especially with the next opponent offering a mix of problems that can make a reset feel a lot less comfortable than it sounds.

Las Vegas has been shaky enough defensively to invite confidence, but the Raiders also have a knack for creating turnovers, which can flip a game fast if San Francisco gets loose with the ball. On the other side, the passing game has found enough rhythm to matter, with Kirk Cousins and Brock Bowers giving the Raiders a couple of routes to stress a defense that wants the bye week to show up on the field immediately.
