49ers Are Rolling But One Problem Is Starting To Loom

The 49ers managed to maintain their winning streak against the Cardinals, but emerging injury woes cast a shadow over their narrow victory.

The 49ers walked out of Sunday afternoon with a 36-30 win over the Cardinals and a 3-0 start, but this one never fully settled into a comfortable cruise. San Francisco built enough cushion to stay in control, then spent the back half of the game fending off an Arizona push that made the final score look far tighter than the early script suggested.

The offense did its part again. Brock Purdy finished 15 of 27 for 297 yards and four touchdowns, and the 49ers piled up 437 yards while scoring on six of their nine drives.

That included five touchdowns, the kind of efficiency that keeps this unit humming even when the game gets messy. Purdy kept pushing the ball downfield, averaging nearly 20 yards per completion, and a handful of playmakers cashed in.

George Kittle was a major factor with six catches for 82 yards and two touchdowns. Deebo Samuel sparked the opening drive of the second half with an 80-yard hook-and-ladder touchdown.

Christian McCaffrey added two more scores and topped 100 total yards. Jordan Watkins made a strong first impression with two catches for 60 yards.

Mike Evans was also off to a big start before leaving with a rib injury.

San Francisco stayed ahead of the sticks, averaged more than 6.0 yards per carry, and went 5 of 8 on third down. Through three games, Purdy has the look of a true MVP candidate, and the only thing that seems capable of slowing this offense right now is health.

Arizona, though, kept hanging around by simply owning the ball. The Cardinals had possession for more than 38 minutes and kept stringing together long drives, even while averaging just 4.5 yards per play and 5.0 yards per pass attempt. They converted 9 of 18 third downs and both of their fourth downs, which let them extend drives and make the game uncomfortable.

The Cardinals put together five drives of eight plays or more, including possessions of 12, 14, 14 and 14 plays. That pressure started to show on the San Francisco defense in the second half, when Arizona scored on four drives and got within two points in the fourth quarter. Jeremiyah Love also ran for 90 yards on 4.3 yards per carry.

And then came the other major storyline: the injury list kept growing.

Mike Evans was carted off early and was later diagnosed with a rib/oblique injury. Trent Williams also left on a cart with what was diagnosed as a stinger.

Dre Greenlaw exited with a quad injury, and Gracen Halton had cramps and did not return. Some of those issues may not turn into long absences, but the accumulation is the problem.

The 49ers entered the season as one of the NFL’s oldest teams, and the wear and tear is already starting to show. Evans has been a booming success, but he dealt with injuries last year and would be a significant loss if he misses time.

Williams is essential to the offense. On the other side of the ball, the injuries are stacking up on the defensive line, and the overall depth is beginning to thin out.

Deebo Samuel Just Had One Of The Strangest Stat Lines Ever

Deebo Samuel delivered one of the oddest box-score quirks youll ever see in the 49ers win over the Cardinals, turning an 80-yard hook-and-ladder into a touchdown without officially catching a pass. It was the kind of play that reminded everyone how uniquely dangerous San Francisco can be when Samuel is lined up all over the field and the ball starts moving side to side.

Even stranger, the output came with a bit of history attached. Samuel finished with the most receiving yards in an NFL game without a reception, topping a mark that had stood since 1961, and he added two rushing attempts for 14 yards. For a player whose value often comes from his versatility, this was a rare line that fit the eye test, the highlight reel and the record book all at once. [Read more 🡒]

49ers Win Came With A Bigger Brock Purdy Concern

The 49ers got the result they needed Sunday, outlasting the Cardinals 36-30 in a game that had plenty of familiar San Francisco fingerprints on it. Brock Purdy handled the offense well despite the injury issues around him, George Kittle delivered a pair of touchdowns, Christian McCaffrey found the end zone on the ground, and Fred Warner again set the tone on defense with 17 tackles.

Still, the win came with the kind of discomfort that can linger beyond the final score. Mike Evans exited with a rib strain, Trent Williams was among the key injuries affecting the passing game, and Dre Greenlaw also left with a quad issue, leaving the 49ers to sort through what Sunday cost them as much as what it gave them. For a team that keeps finding ways to win, the bigger question now is how long it can keep doing it while pieces keep dropping out. [Read more 🡒]

49ers Win Came With A Bigger Concern Fans Could Feel

The 49ers got off to a fast start Sunday with a hook-and-ladder touchdown involving Deebo Samuel and Mike Evans, then kept stacking points even as the game started to turn into something more uneasy. Christian McCaffrey added a touchdown of his own, and the defense mixed in stops while the Cardinals found enough offense to stay around the fight, leaving San Francisco ahead at halftime with the kind of lead that can still feel fragile.

What made the win feel bigger than the scoreboard was the injury picture developing around it. Deommodore Lenoir and Mike Evans were among the players who dealt with issues, and for a team trying to build rhythm while scoring in spurts and trading field goals, the concern was impossible to ignore. The 49ers walked into the locker room with control of the game, but also with the kind of health questions that can linger long after the final whistle. [Read more 🡒]
