The Los Angeles Chargers tried to turn one practice rep into a victory lap Tuesday, but the clip they posted says more about joint practices than it does about the San Francisco 49ers.
In the sequence, Chargers running back Omarion Hampton powered through contact from 49ers safety Ji’Ayir Brown and linebacker Jaden Dugger, and the video made the defense look bad at first glance. But that only works if you ignore the most obvious part of the setting: these are joint practices, where full-speed tackling is not the point.
The Chargers’ post even framed the play as something fantasy managers should pay attention to, but the moment is hard to treat like a real measuring stick. In an actual regular-season game, defenders would be aiming low, wrapping up, and doing everything they could to get Hampton to the turf. That wasn’t the reality here, which is why using the clip as proof of anything substantial is a stretch.
That said, the practice itself still matters. By all accounts, Los Angeles had the better of it on both sides of the ball, and that can serve as a useful jolt for San Francisco. The 49ers just saw a tougher opponent than the Tennessee Titans, and a rough day in practice can still be a reminder that the margin for error disappears fast.
What it should not do is send anyone into a panic about the 49ers’ defense or the season as a whole. One practice rep is one practice rep. It does, however, give Brown and Dugger a chance to answer in Thursday’s preseason game and show they can finish plays the right way.
Brown is already going to be under the microscope after his public tiff with former 49ers safety Donte Whitner in the offseason, so every snap he takes will be watched closely. Dugger has impressed so far, but as a rookie, his highs and lows are going to get extra attention too.
In the end, it was just a practice play, and that’s all it should be treated as unless somebody got hurt. The good news for San Francisco is that there were no season-ending injuries Tuesday, and if the 49ers can keep getting through the rest of the preseason without major health setbacks, they’ll like where they stand heading into the regular season.

49ers Have A Christian Kirk Decision That Could Reshape WR Depth
Christian Kirks arrival was supposed to give the 49ers another experienced option in a receiver room that already has plenty of names to sort through, with Mike Evans, Deebo Samuel and rookie DeZhaun Stribling all in the mix. Instead, Kirk has been dealing with a calf strain since training camp opened, and he has not been on the practice field recently, leaving his status as one of the more practical roster questions in camp.
For a team already weighing how to manage a crowded depth chart, the next move on Kirk could matter as much as the signing itself. San Francisco is looking at ways to keep him around without burning a roster spot while he recovers, and the decision it makes in the coming days could shape how the receiver group is organized when the season begins. 49ers Have Six Players With Everything Riding On This Chargers Game
The 49ers second preseason game against the Chargers is more than just another August tune-up for a handful of roster hopefuls. It gives six players a chance to separate themselves in a crowded competition, with Carver Willis, Robert Jones, Kaelon Black, Ephesians Prysock, Jordan Watkins, and Jacob Cowing all trying to use live game snaps to improve their standing with the team.
For players in that spot, preseason work is about more than looking sharp in camp drills. It is about carrying practice momentum into a game setting, showing they can handle real speed and real pressure, and giving the coaching staff a clearer picture before roster decisions get tighter. Against Los Angeles, each of those six has something riding on every snap. [Read more 🡒]
49ers Backfield Gets Shaken Up Again With McCaffrey Still Out
Another week, another reset in the 49ers backfield. San Francisco placed Patrick Taylor Jr. on injured reserve and responded by signing Khalil Herbert to a one-year deal, adding yet another name to a running back room that has already been asked to absorb plenty of change.
With Christian McCaffrey still unavailable for the upcoming game, the 49ers are planning to spread the load among Kaelon Black, Sincere McCormick, Zamir White, and Herbert. It leaves the team piecing together a rotation on the fly, and the bigger question is how quickly the new mix can settle in before the next round of roster movement arrives. [Read more 🡒]
