The San Francisco coach made it clear he wants more burst from the run game, and more of those game-changing carries from McCaffrey in 2026. He also said the lack of explosiveness in earlier seasons came from a number of different issues. “There are a few that Christian could do better, but I want to give him more opportunities,” Shanahan said.
Shanahan also pointed the spotlight beyond McCaffrey. He made it clear this isn’t just about the running back creating more on his own; the coaching staff and the rest of the roster have to help set up those chances too.
Even with McCaffrey still performing at a high level, the 49ers are already thinking ahead. The reality for running backs past 30 is part of that calculation, and next year’s draft is being viewed as a possible place to start preparing for what comes next. NFL analyst Ryan Wilson had San Francisco selecting Florida back Jadan Baugh with the 16th pick in his latest mock draft.
Wilson said, “The 49ers zig when others expect them to zag when it comes to the draft. They could plan for life for Trent Williams here, or maybe add another receiver.
Instead, they get the best back of the class in Jadan Baugh, who reminds me of in-hi-prime Le’Veon Bell. That type of player in a Shahanan offense feels like a no-brainer,” Wilson said on his mock draft.
For now, McCaffrey remains the centerpiece. If Shanahan gets the extra explosiveness he wants, the rookie running back conversation can wait a while longer.
