The 49ers kept moving over the weekend, and one of the bigger additions came in the backfield: San Francisco signed veteran running back Khalil Herbert to a one-year deal, according to ESPN.
Herbert has spent most of his NFL career in a reserve role, and he arrives as the expected backup to Christian McCaffrey. In the 2025 season, Herbert ran for the New York Jets and finished with 52 yards on 16 carries.
Across his career, Herbert has totaled 1,957 rushing yards and scored nine touchdowns on the ground. His most recent rushing touchdown came in 2024, when he was with the Chicago Bears.
The 49ers also pointed to Herbert’s college resume in announcing the move. “A 28-year-old native of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Herbert attended the University of Kansas (2016-19) and Virginia Tech (2020) where he appeared in 46 games (22 starts) and registered 474 carries for 2,917 yards and 22 touchdowns on the ground while adding 33 receptions for 293 yards and one touchdown through the air,” the team said.
San Francisco added another piece Sunday as well, agreeing to a one-year deal with defensive lineman Titus Leo. The 49ers said, “Leo (6-3, 245) was originally drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the sixth round (211th overall) of the 2023 NFL Draft.
Throughout his three-year NFL career with the Colts (2023-24), New England Patriots (2025), Tennessee Titans (2025), Cleveland Browns (2025) and Philadelphia Eagles (2025), he has appeared in four games and registered one tackle and one pass defensed. In 2025, Leo signed to the Eagles practice squad on October 15, before he was released by the team on December 30,”
San Francisco also brought in veteran defensive end Ogbo Okoronkwo for a workout. Okoronkwo spent the 2025 season with the Philadelphia Eagles, though he did not record a tackle.
The 49ers went 12-5 in 2025 before falling to the Seattle Seahawks in the NFL Playoffs.
