The San Diego Padres weren’t done making moves before the MLB trade deadline.
On deadline day, the club added another arm, announcing it had acquired right-handed pitcher Hunter Stratton from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for right-hander Andrew Moore.
The move came after the Padres also brought in right-handed pitcher Casey Mize and infielder Gage Workman from the Detroit Tigers, along with left-handed pitcher Robbie Ray from the San Francisco Giants. It was a clear push to bolster the pitching staff, and San Diego kept working right up to the finish.
Stratton, 29, has spent time in three big league games this season, with two appearances for Pittsburgh and one for the Atlanta Braves. In 3.1 innings, he has allowed two runs for a 5.40 ERA, while striking out three and issuing no walks.
At Triple-A, he has logged 28 appearances between two organizations and posted a 3.31 ERA across 32.2 innings. He has 33 strikeouts and 19 walks there.
The Pirates drafted Stratton in the 16th round of the 2017 MLB Draft, and he reached the majors with Pittsburgh in 2023. In 62 career MLB appearances, he owns a 3.88 ERA with 62 strikeouts and 17 walks over 72 innings.
After the trade, the Padres optioned Stratton to Triple-A, where he’ll provide minor league pitching depth.
Moore, 26, had been in the Padres organization since last year, when San Diego got him from the Cincinnati Reds in a deal for utility man Connor Joe. This season, he posted a 1.85 ERA with 24 strikeouts over 24.1 innings in 20 Double-A San Antonio appearances, and a 6.14 ERA with 19 strikeouts over 14.2 innings in 10 games at Triple-A El Paso.
To clear space on the 40-man roster, the Padres transferred right-handed pitcher Jason Adam to the 60-day injured list. Adam is working his way back from a right shoulder injury and is not expected to return until late August or September.
“We’ve got to knock the last little bit out just to keep it from coming back,” Adam said last week. “Again, they won’t give you a hard timeline.
You kind of show up day to day, read the symptoms and base it off that. But every day is getting better, so hopefully I can stack a couple days where I come in and feel nothing, and then we can launch more.”
