Padres Trounced by Rangers in Stunning 22-2 Spring Training Showdown

Padres' pitching woes take center stage as Texas Rangers dominate in a rough Spring Training outing, highlighting both struggles and standout performances.

The Padres’ Spring Training got interesting with their first taste of split-squad action, taking on both the Rangers and Guardians. One group headed to Surprise to face the Rangers, and let's just say, it was a tough day on the mound.

A Challenging Outing

Marco Gonzales had a rough start for the Padres, as he struggled to find his rhythm. In the first inning alone, he gave up four runs and walked four batters before being relieved with two outs.

Clay Edmondson stepped in but couldn't stop the bleeding, allowing three inherited runners to score. Gonzales returned for the second inning, only to give up a home run to Brandon Nimmo.

The third inning was where things really unraveled. Gonzales managed just one out-a sacrifice bunt-while four of the five hits he allowed were well-struck.

With the bases loaded, Logan Gillaspie came in but missed his spot, resulting in a grand slam by Josh Smith. The Rangers weren’t done, though.

Ezequiel Duran and Wyatt Langford each added home runs, followed by Corey Seager going back-to-back with Langford, marking the Rangers’ fourth homer of the inning.

When all was said and done, Gonzales had allowed 11 runs (10 earned) on eight hits and six walks over two-plus innings. Gillaspie, despite allowing nine earned runs and five homers, showed impressive stamina, throwing 76 pitches with 47 strikes.

Bowen Shines Bright

Jase Bowen, a minor league signee, continued to impress with his third home run of the spring-a massive 435-foot shot off Rangers starter Nathan Eovaldi. Bowen's been on a roll, hitting .293 with a .341 on-base percentage and a .975 OPS in his 41 spring at-bats. While he’s expected to start the season at Triple-A, Bowen’s performance could quickly put him in the major league mix if the Padres need outfield depth.

Injury Updates

Jason Adam is making strides in his recovery from a ruptured quad tendon. He recently pitched in another simulated game and is expected to join Spring Training action soon, possibly against the Diamondbacks. Meanwhile, Yuki Matsui is still working back from an adductor injury, with no set timetable for his return.

Looking Ahead

Next up, the Padres hit the road to Scottsdale to face the Arizona Diamondbacks. Randy Vasquez will take the mound for San Diego, squaring off against Arizona’s Brandon Pfaadt. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 pm Pacific.

The Padres are navigating some challenges, but with promising performances and players on the mend, there’s plenty to watch as Spring Training progresses.
