The Padres didn’t just take a loss from the Dodgers on Thursday night. They walked out of it with three more injury concerns, and the biggest one came from the mound.
Randy Vasquez, who started the game for San Diego, was struck in the ankle by a Mookie Betts line drive and later passed out while being taken for an X-ray after leaving the game in the fourth inning. Manager Craig Stammen said Vasquez is “currently stable and conscious,” and the team shifted from trying to get the X-ray done inside the stadium to sending him to a local hospital for an ER evaluation.
“He was on his way to get an X-ray here in the stadium and fainted,” Stammen said in a piece written by AJ Cassavell of MLB.com. “So we took him to the emergency room just as a precaution.
He’s conscious. He’s getting all his tests done.
"So we don’t really know about his ankle yet. He’s getting all those kinds of tests. We’ll know more hopefully tonight and tomorrow.”
The injury pile kept growing from there. Catcher Freddy Fermin was forced out after taking a foul ball off his mask in the fifth inning, and he’s now being checked for a concussion.
"Another ding to the head again,” said Stammen. “He’s getting evaluated by the doctors to test for a concussion and a head contusion and all that stuff. We’ll obviously know more later tonight or tomorrow.
"They sensed something was off. They said in Spanish that he said he was a little dizzy. Immediately when you hear that, it’s like, ‘All right, you’ve got to get out of the game.’”
Before the game even started, San Diego had already lost reliever Jason Adam, who was placed on the 15-day injured list with a right shoulder strain. Right-hander German Marquez was reinstated to fill Adam’s roster spot.
Stammen said Adam felt the strain while playing catch.
"He just felt like he couldn’t get it going,” Stammen said. “We felt like the safest thing was to put him on the IL, call Germán up.
So hopefully Jason’s injury isn’t too long. And then we can give him a little breather, and he can be back helping our bullpen again.”

Padres Pitcher Sparks Postgame Scare After Dodgers Wild Comeback
Randy Vsquezs night took a worrying turn after the Padres loss to the Dodgers, when the right-hander needed medical attention for an ankle issue that began after he was struck by a comebacker early in the game. Vsquez still managed to pitch three innings, allowing four runs, before leaving the mound and being sent for further evaluation.
The situation became more concerning once he was being checked out, and the club moved quickly to have him examined more thoroughly as a precaution. For a Padres team already trying to absorb a painful collapse against Los Angeles, the bigger concern now is the health of one of its pitchers, with tests still ongoing and no immediate clarity beyond the fact that he was stable and conscious. A.J. Preller Suddenly Holds The Key To Padres Deadline Pressure
The Padres are headed toward another busy trade deadline, and this one feels especially tied to A.J. Prellers appetite for a big swing. San Diego has been linked to upgrades on offense and possibly in the rotation, but the conversation around the club has centered on how badly the lineup needs help and whether Preller will have the freedom to chase it.
Alden Gonzalez pointed to the Padres struggles at the plate as the driving force, and the bigger question now is how far ownership is willing to go to support a push. With a new group in place, Preller may have more room to take on money than he has in past summers, which could open the door to a more aggressive pursuit of impact bats and maybe even a front-line arm if the market breaks the right way.
