The Padres found one more bullpen piece in the middle of their deadline-day chaos, quietly landing right-hander Hunter Stratton from the Pirates for minor league pitcher Andrew Moore.
It was the kind of move that won’t dominate the headlines, especially with A.J. Preller already working through a flurry of bigger deals. Still, it fits the job description for a contender: add another arm, protect against the wear and tear that shows up late, and see if there’s something useful to unlock before the season gets away from you.
Pittsburgh announced the trade and sent Moore to Triple-A Indianapolis.
Stratton’s path to San Diego has been a winding one. He started the 2026 season in the Atlanta Braves organization, spending most of his time with Triple-A Gwinnett. Atlanta gave him a brief big-league look in May, then designated him for assignment on June 17.
From there, his season kept bouncing around. Pittsburgh got him in a trade that sent catcher Joey Bart to the Braves.
Bart, as it turns out, was moved again on Aug. 3 to the White Sox. Stratton then shuttled between Indianapolis and the Pirates, made two major league appearances for Pittsburgh, and wound up back in DFA limbo on Aug. 1 when the club needed a roster spot for Camilo Doval.
The big-league line this year is thin: 3 1/3 innings over three appearances, a 5.40 ERA, a 1.80 WHIP and three strikeouts. That’s not much to hang a verdict on.
The Triple-A work is a different story. With Indianapolis, Stratton threw eight scoreless innings across seven outings, posted a 0.63 WHIP and struck out nine. That’s the version San Diego is betting on.
For the Padres, this was about grabbing a 29-year-old reliever who had shown enough in Triple-A to justify a move, then paying with a minor league right-hander to get it done. Moore may still develop into something for Pittsburgh, but San Diego is playing the present. The Padres want as many usable arms as they can get before fatigue, injuries and late-season messiness start hitting the staff.
