The San Diego Padres kicked off the 2026 season with a bit of a stumble, taking just one out of three games at home against the Detroit Tigers. Scoring seven runs across the series wasn't the explosive start fans were hoping for. But amid the ups and downs, there were some standout performances worth noting.
Randy Vásquez and Ramón Laureano Shine, Gavin Sheets Struggles
Randy Vásquez: A New Level?
Randy Vásquez isn't typically the guy you expect to dominate, but he sure made a statement in his 2026 debut. Last season, Vásquez managed only three scoreless outings over 26 starts. This year, he's already a quarter of the way there after just one game.
Vásquez struck out eight batters over six scoreless innings, showcasing an impressive increase in velocity. Last year, his fastball averaged 93.5 MPH.
This season, he’s hitting 98 MPH and averaging 95 MPH while throwing it more frequently. That's a significant jump for a pitcher known more for inducing contact than missing bats.
Whether it's adrenaline, some magic from pitching coach Ruben Niebla, or just a new level of skill, Vásquez is looking sharp.
Ramón Laureano Proves His Consistency
Ramón Laureano had a standout 2025, delivering an .855 OPS with the Padres and Orioles. In the opening series against the Tigers, Laureano kept the momentum going, going 5-for-12 with a home run and a double. It's the kind of performance that suggests Laureano is ready to be a consistent force for the Padres this season.
Gavin Sheets: Searching for Last Year's Spark
Gavin Sheets burst onto the scene last year with a memorable Opening Day, including a pinch-hit homer that sparked a hot start. This year, however, Sheets struggled to find his rhythm, going 0-for-8 with three strikeouts in the first three games. While it’s not the start he or the fans hoped for, there’s still plenty of season left for Sheets to recapture some of that magic.
As the Padres look ahead, they'll aim to build on these individual performances and find their stride as a team. With a long season ahead, there’s ample opportunity for the Friars to turn things around and make a splash in 2026.
