Padres Narrow Buyer Field as Sale Process Gains Momentum

As the San Diego Padres prepare for a potential record-breaking sale, their rotation faces challenges with key players starting the season on the injured list.

The San Diego Padres are making strides in their sale process, narrowing down potential buyers from five to four, with expectations that the deal could wrap up by April. Reports from Kevin Acee and ESPN's Jeff Passan suggest the sale price could top $3 billion, setting a new MLB franchise record, surpassing the $2.4 billion paid for the Mets in 2020.

The Seidler family announced their intention to sell back in November, initially facing some internal family disagreements. However, by February, it seemed those issues were largely resolved, allowing five groups to submit bids. Now, one group is out of the running, though details remain under wraps.

On the field, the Padres are facing some early-season challenges, particularly with Joe Musgrove, who might start the season on the injured list. Musgrove, coming off Tommy John surgery that sidelined him for 2025, has been progressing slowly. After pitching three innings in an exhibition game on March 4th, he hasn't been able to recover as hoped and has only managed one bullpen session since.

Manager Craig Stammen describes the situation as a “holding pattern,” emphasizing caution to ensure Musgrove is fully ready. With Opening Day just two weeks away, the likelihood of an IL stint grows with each passing day.

The Padres' rotation is shaping up to include Michael King, Nick Pivetta, and Randy Vásquez, with Germán Márquez and Walker Buehler vying for the final spots should Musgrove be unavailable. Buehler, not yet on the 40-man roster, has the option to opt out if he isn't added by the end of camp.

The Padres are also dealing with other roster issues. Matt Waldron, recovering from hemorrhoid surgery, is expected to start on the IL but should return soon. Griffin Canning aims to rejoin the rotation a bit later than Musgrove and Waldron.

Infield troubles continue as Sung Mun Song battles a right oblique issue, likely putting him on the IL to start the season. Will Wagner, who might have filled in, is also sidelined with an oblique strain.

This could open opportunities for players like Ty France or Mason McCoy. France, like Buehler, can opt out if not added to the 40-man roster.

The Padres recently cleared a spot by outrighting Daison Acosta, but more moves might be needed, especially with Yu Darvish and Bryan Hoeing expected to miss the entire 2026 season due to surgeries.
