Padres May Have Found An Outfield Answer At The Perfect Time

Despite a rocky start to his MLB career, Dustin Harris's unexpected rise could be the spark the Padres need to prolong their playoff run.

The Padres are staring at elimination in the NLDS, and one of the few bright spots in a shaky season has been Dustin Harris.

San Diego trails the Milwaukee Brewers two games to none and now has to rip off three straight wins just to stay alive. In the middle of that pressure, Harris has already given the club something it badly needed: a breakout rookie season and a real answer in left field.

The 27-year-old arrived in San Diego after a whirlwind year that saw him bounce from the Chicago White Sox to the Houston Astros before landing with the Padres. He was designated for assignment by both clubs after short stints - six games with the White Sox and 11 with the Astros - following a start to the season that also included just 21 Major League games over his first two years with the Texas Rangers.

Once he got to San Diego, everything changed. Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter wrote, "The Padres used nine different starting left fielders in 2026, ultimately settling into a productive platoon of Samad Taylor and Harris," and added, "After spending time with the White Sox and Astros earlier in the season, Harris hit .322/.364/.422 for a 120 OPS+ in 100 plate appearances after coming to San Diego."

That production has put Harris in position to stick. He had two hits and drew a walk in Game 1 of the NLDS, and he was in the postseason for the first time in the Wild Card Series against the Chicago Cubs.

The Padres are now expected to keep him in the organization and let him compete for the starting left field job in spring training. Harris is under club control through the 2031 season, making his surge look like a major minor league signing for San Diego.

Padres Face A Game 3 Problem Fans Will Hate

Nick Pivetta gives the Padres a familiar kind of October question heading into Game 3 against Milwaukee: can recent form outweigh a history that has not gone well in this matchup? Since coming back from the injured list, he has looked much sharper, but his track record against the Brewers has been hard to ignore, with trouble limiting walks and runs across his career starts against them.

For San Diego, the concern is less about what Pivetta has shown lately than whether the Brewers can lean on a matchup they have handled before. His numbers against Milwaukee include an ugly 8.76 ERA and a rough outing dating back to 2017, the kind of background that gives a postseason start a little extra weight, even before the first pitch is thrown. Padres Head Into Elimination Game With Mason Miller Under Real Scrutiny

Mason Millers sudden October wobble has become one of the sharper questions hanging over the Padres as they head into an elimination game against Milwaukee. After he blew the save in Game 2 by allowing two runs in the ninth inning, the focus shifted quickly from a single rough outing to the possibility that something more was going on, with reports suggesting he may have been tipping pitches.

Miller has denied knowingly doing it, and he has pointed to fatigue from a multi-inning save attempt as part of the explanation for his struggles. Either way, San Diego cannot afford much more uncertainty in the late innings, especially with its offense needing to do more to keep the season alive. [Read more 🡒]

Brewers Just Got A Game 3 Opening Padres Fans Hate

A little lineup shuffling is the last thing the Padres wanted heading into a Game 3 they need to win, but Gavin Sheets is out of the starting mix because of a stiff neck. He is still available off the bench, while Samad Taylor slides into the batting order as San Diego tries to steady itself against Milwaukee with the NLDS on the line.

Nick Pivetta gets the ball in a familiar kind of pressure spot, making his second postseason start after coming back from injury. For the Padres, the margin is thin enough already, and losing a regular from the opening lineup only adds to the unease as they try to keep their season moving in the right direction. [Read more 🡒]
