That’s why Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley has San Diego landing Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Freddy Peralta on a two-year deal in free agency.
"Prediction: Peralta signs a two-year deal with the San Diego Padres," Buckley predicts for the Rays' starting pitcher.
Peralta’s case comes down to timing and upside. His 2026 season with the Mets was rough, finishing with a 4.99 ERA across 113.2 innings. That kind of line usually points toward a short, low-risk contract rather than a big multi-year payday.
But the picture changed after he was dealt to the Rays at the deadline. In 50 innings with Tampa Bay, Peralta has turned in a 3.60 ERA, enough to make teams think a longer commitment could be worth it.
For San Diego, there’s already a blueprint on the table. The Padres gave Michael King a three-year, $75 million deal with opt-outs after the first and second seasons, and that kind of structure would make sense again here.
The rotation math is what makes this so appealing. King is likely to opt out, and Nick Pivetta, Robbie Ray, and Casey Mize are all set to become free agents after the season. That leaves the Padres with a clear need for more help on the mound.
Peralta fits the profile of the kind of arm San Diego can chase: high-upside, not wildly expensive, and capable of making an immediate difference. For the Padres, Buckley’s prediction would be a strong way to attack the offseason.
