The Padres finally found their groove on Saturday night, snagging their first win of the 2026 season against the Detroit Tigers. The packed crowd at Petco Park witnessed right-hander Randy Vásquez steal the show with six scoreless innings, helping San Diego avoid a potentially disheartening series sweep.
Vásquez, who has been on an upward trend since last season, showcased his impressive velocity, consistently hitting between 95 and 97 mph. His command was on point, allowing just two walks while striking out eight Tigers, maintaining a firm grip on the strike zone.
Acquired in the blockbuster trade that sent Juan Soto to the Yankees, the 27-year-old Vásquez is proving to be a pivotal part of the Padres' rotation. Once seen as an inconsistent performer, he's now emerging as a key player for San Diego's pitching staff.
Manager Craig Stammen praised Vásquez's performance, noting, "He came and delivered. One of the best games Randy's probably pitched for the Padres.
Attacked the zone really well. Used his fastball.
Used his breaking stuff. Had it all under control today."
Vásquez threw a total of 91 pitches, with 59 landing as strikes, and induced 13 whiffs from Detroit's lineup.
The Padres' offense did its part, putting up three runs. A two-out rally in the third inning brought hits from Freddy Fermin, Jake Cronenworth, and Fernando Tatis Jr., giving Vásquez the support he needed.
Ramón Laureano continued his hot streak, going 3-for-4 with a stolen base. He's been on fire with five hits, including a double and a home run, in his first 12 at-bats.
In relief, lefty Kyle Hart kept the momentum going with a scoreless seventh and eighth, setting the stage for Mason Miller. Miller wrapped things up neatly, earning his first save of the season by striking out rookie Kevin McGonigle to close the game.
