The Brewers are already moving like a club that expects to be in the middle of the deadline conversation.
Milwaukee sits at 64-38 and is only a half-game behind the Dodgers for the best record in baseball, and that kind of position changes the way a front office can think. Add in the fact that the Brewers own the best farm system in the sport, and it’s easy to see why their name keeps coming up in big-ticket trade talk.
On Wednesday, MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy reported that Milwaukee has already reached out to the San Diego Padres about closer Mason Miller and the Detroit Tigers about starter Tarik Skubal.
"Given that success on the field, Brewers officials are prepared to adopt a more aggressive approach at the Trade Deadline compared to recent years, according to sources familiar with the club’s thinking," McCalvy wrote. "Yes, that means Milwaukee officials have touched base with Detroit about starter Tarik Skubal, and with San Diego about closer Mason Miller.
"But the Tigers and Padres must first decide to trade those players, and the Brewers must decide how much to deal from their young crop of Major League starters or from MLB Pipeline’s top-ranked Minor League system."
That’s the key part here: this isn’t just deadline chatter floating around the edges. One of the most connected voices on the Brewers is saying the club has already made contact on two of the biggest names available, and that Milwaukee is open to being more aggressive than it has been in recent years.
Skubal has been tied to the Brewers for months. Miller is the newer name in the mix, but he brings a different kind of impact.
He has been the best reliever in baseball this season, posting a 0.86 ERA in 40 appearances with 25 saves. He has also piled up 78 strikeouts in 41 2/3 innings, and he has faced 160 batters while striking out 48.75 percent of them.
That kind of production would fit cleanly into a Milwaukee bullpen that already ranks fourth in ERA at 3.53. If the Brewers could land Miller, they’d be looking at the best bullpen in the game, and that matters plenty once October arrives.
There’s also the contract control angle. Miller has three seasons of team control left, which only adds to his appeal.
The price would be steep. The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon reported that acquiring Miller could cost two top-100 prospects.
Milwaukee has the kind of system that makes that conversation possible, though. The Brewers have six top-100 prospects, including Jesús Made, the No. 1 overall prospect in baseball.
In other words, Milwaukee has the talent base to chase a deal this big if it decides the moment calls for it.
