The Padres are headed to October, and one of their first big postseason questions is whether they’ll do something a little out of the ordinary behind the plate.
MLB.com’s AJ Cassavell projected San Diego to carry three catchers on its 26-man roster for the Wild Card Series: Luis Campusano, Freddy Fermin and rookie Ethan Salas. If that holds, the Padres would enter the round with an extra option at catcher rather than trimming the group down to two.
Cassavell called the catching situation one of the team’s biggest unresolved roster decisions. If the Padres choose not to keep all three, they’ll have to decide which two stay on the roster.
Salas has made a strong case to be part of the conversation since his September promotion. The 20-year-old was right in the middle of San Diego’s clinching win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday, breaking up Tyler Glasnow’s no-hit bid with a single in the sixth inning before scoring the Padres’ first run. He then added an RBI single in the seventh during San Diego’s 4-2 comeback victory.
That outing added to an already eye-opening first month in the majors for Salas, who was recently named the Padres’ Minor League Player of the Year. Earlier this month, he also made MLB history by becoming the youngest catcher ever to hit a multi-homer game.
Still, the choice isn’t only about Salas. Campusano and Fermin give San Diego two other catching options, and the roster math could get tighter if injured position players Gavin Sheets and Miguel Andújar are ready to return for the postseason.
For now, Cassavell’s three-catcher setup is only a projection. The Padres have not announced their Wild Card Series roster yet. But after Salas helped deliver their ticket to October, San Diego now has to decide whether the rookie gets a postseason role, too.
