Padres Could Help Decide A Wild Card Mess MLB Created

MLB's decision to delay announcing the start time for the pivotal Braves-Phillies Wild Card Game until the day of has sparked criticism and uncertainty for teams and fans alike.

MLB has left the Braves and Phillies waiting on one of the biggest details of their Wild Card showdown: Thursday’s Game 3 start time.

Atlanta and Philadelphia are headed to a decisive game after the Phillies grabbed a 4-3 win on Wednesday to force the series finale, but the league still has not locked in when the game will begin. MLB has only given two possibilities for the start: 2:15 p.m.

ET or 8:15 p.m. ET.

That gap creates a very different day for both clubs as they try to reach the NL Divisional Round. The winner of the Braves-Phillies series will move on to face the Los Angeles Dodgers, with that series set to begin on Saturday, Oct. 3.

The uncertainty comes because MLB is waiting on other results before making the call. The Boston Red Sox-New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs-San Diego Padres games on Wednesday night will help determine where Braves-Phillies lands on the schedule.

The first pitch for Cubs-Padres is not until 10:00 p.m. ET, which could leave the league without a Game 2 winner until deep into Thursday morning.

The Yankees and Padres both lead their respective series 1-0. If either of those teams loses Wednesday, MLB is expected to keep Braves-Phillies in the early 2:15 p.m.

ET slot. If both move on with Game 2 wins, the Braves and Phillies are likely to be pushed back to the 8:15 p.m.

ET window.

The delay has drawn backlash, especially with so much talent on the field. Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber and Ronald Acuna Jr. are all part of this series, and Harper and Schwarber both went deep in Game 2.

Brewers Have The Edge But One Padres Threat Feels Very Real

The Padres arrive in the Division Series with some real momentum after getting past the Cubs in the wild-card round, and that matters when a team is lining up against a Brewers club built around pitching. Milwaukee has the edge on paper, especially with Jacob Misiorowski set to start Game 1 and Logan Henderson expected to follow, but San Diego has shown enough lately to make this more than a routine matchup.

What makes this series interesting is that the Brewers are leaning on a staff that can smother an opponent, while the Padres are coming in with the kind of recent form that can travel in October. Milwaukees arms are the obvious headline, but San Diegos offense has already shown it can get hot at the right time, which is exactly the sort of threat that can complicate a series that looks straightforward until the first few innings unfold. Padres Owners Already Face A Harsh Test In San Diego

Jose E. Feliciano and Kwanza Jones arrived with the kind of ambition Padres fans want to hear, making clear that their goal is a World Series title. The timing is encouraging, too, with San Diego fresh off a wild-card sweep of the Cubs and carrying one of the more energized home crowds in the sport after topping 3 million fans in the 2023 regular season.

Still, the job in front of the new ownership group is not only about sustaining momentum on the field. An anonymous general manager has already raised concerns about the financial strain created by the clubs big payroll commitments to key players, which adds an immediate layer of pressure to the transition. Feliciano has framed those obligations as opportunities, but how the Padres balance that view against the realities of the market may become one of the first defining tests of the new era. Padres Outfield Prospect Just Forced His Way Into The Conversation

Orey Lott spent the postseason turning heads for Low-A Lake Elsinore, and he did it in a way that is hard for a front office to ignore. Over three games in the California League Championship series, the Padres outfield prospect led all minor league players in total bases, backing it up with a .444/.524/.944 line and multiple extra-base hits.

Lott is not currently ranked among San Diegos top 30 prospects, but that is exactly why his run stands out. The Padres have plenty of higher-profile names in the system, yet performances like this are how an under-the-radar player starts to force his way into the discussion, especially if the development keeps trending the same way.
