The Padres have cut ties with two veteran right-handers, releasing José Leclerc and J.P. France from the organization this week, according to the team’s transaction log on MiLB.com.
Both pitchers were officially let go by Triple-A El Paso.
Leclerc, 32, had been brought in by San Diego in March, right before Opening Day, as the club looked to add depth to its pitching staff. Instead, his season turned into a grind across the Padres’ minor league ladder. He logged time at Triple-A, Double-A, High-A and Rookie Ball, finishing with a 7.77 ERA over 24.1 innings.
His struggles were especially rough in El Paso, where he made seven appearances and posted an 11.74 ERA. In those 7.2 innings, he struck out four and walked eight.
Leclerc’s path to San Diego came after a long run with the Rangers, where he debuted in 2016 and stayed through 2024. Over eight seasons in Texas, including the year he missed while recovering from Tommy John surgery in 2021, he put up a 3.27 ERA across 350 appearances.
He then signed with the Athletics after the 2024 season on a one-year, $10 million deal. That stint never got on track. Leclerc gave up a 6.00 ERA in 10 appearances before a late-April lat muscle strain led to season-ending surgery.
France’s stop in the Padres system was even shorter. San Diego signed the 31-year-old at the start of August, just before the trade deadline, and assigned him to Triple-A. He made 10 appearances for El Paso and finished with an 8.44 ERA, along with nine strikeouts and eight walks over 10.2 innings.
Drafted by the Astros in the 14th round of the 2018 MLB Draft, France spent his entire career in Houston before joining the Padres last month. He reached the majors in 2023 and was productive enough that he looked like a possible long-term piece in the Astros rotation, posting a 3.83 ERA in 24 appearances, 23 of them starts.
But the momentum didn’t last. France struggled in five starts in 2024 before season-ending shoulder surgery, and since coming back, he has appeared in only five big league games. Houston released him at the end of July after he put up an 8.10 ERA in three major league appearances this season.
San Diego had hoped France might become a late-season bullpen option. Instead, he’s back on the open market just a month after arriving.
