The San Francisco Giants have been methodical in their approach to camp cuts this Spring Training, a process influenced by both a new coaching staff familiarizing themselves with the roster and the logistical challenges posed by the World Baseball Classic. With the season just around the corner, they've made another round of decisions.
On Tuesday, the Giants announced their latest roster moves, which included right-handed pitcher Blade Tidwell being optioned to AAA Sacramento and first baseman Jake Holton being reassigned to Minor League camp. The distinction in terminology is straightforward: Tidwell is on the 40-man roster, while Holton is not.
Tidwell, acquired in the Tyler Rogers trade at last year's deadline, showed potential during his first Spring Training with the Giants. Despite a challenging ERA of 9.45 over 6.2 innings in five appearances, his fastball was electric, flirting with triple digits and racking up 13 strikeouts.
However, control issues were evident as he issued six walks. He also faced Team USA in an exhibition, where he struggled but managed to strike out notable hitters like Roman Anthony and Gunnar Henderson.
Tidwell will begin the season in Sacramento’s rotation, joining a group of promising arms. It's likely we'll see him in San Francisco this year, potentially stepping into the rotation or as a high-leverage reliever.
Interestingly, Tidwell is the first player the Giants have optioned this spring, highlighting the ongoing camp battles and the complexity of managing a roster with limited options.
Jake Holton, on the other hand, saw significant action as a non-roster invitee, appearing in 19 games. Despite his efforts, he struggled at the plate, hitting 7-34 with a couple of extra-base hits and a .680 OPS. With experience in AA from his time with the Detroit Tigers, Holton is expected to start this season in AAA, providing depth similar to what Trenton Brooks offered two years ago.
Starting with 19 non-roster invitees, the Giants have now reduced that number to 10, assigning several to Minor League camp and adding Joey Lucchesi. Including Tidwell's move, the roster stands at 49 players, meaning 23 more cuts or IL placements are needed before next Wednesday.
