Fernando Tatis Jr. is now represented by Jay-Z’s agency, a move that raises eyebrows mostly because of the timing. Tatis is already under contract with the Padres through 2034, so on paper there isn’t an obvious need for a change. Still, the switch comes as he’s beginning to look more like the player the Padres expected to see from the start of the season.
The first half wasn’t empty production by any means. Over 95 games, Tatis hit .277 with 23 stolen bases and 45 runs scored. The part that stuck out, though, was the power output: just five home runs and 35 RBI.
That has changed since the break. In his first 22 games of the second half, Tatis is hitting .307 with six home runs, 19 RBI, and 19 runs scored.
The numbers line up better with the underlying data, too. His ISO is down to .135 this season, but his 11.5% barrel rate and 52.7% hard hit are not the profile of a player who’s been completely off track.
The main concern was his 5.3-degree average launch angle, and he now appears to be past that.
For the Padres, the bigger picture still looks good. They remain a competitive team and should be in the postseason this fall. Tatis is already locked into his long-term deal, but the source of the change is still worth watching, especially since he’s working with a new agency now.
There’s no indication anyone is truly unhappy. And while the move shouldn’t affect what Tatis does on the field, it could mean more endorsements and a bigger profile away from it.
