Casey Mize’s first night in a Padres uniform turned into a rough one fast, and the Arizona Diamondbacks made sure San Diego never recovered.
Acquired at the Major League Baseball trade deadline to help fix the Padres’ starting pitching issues, Mize was handed the ball Wednesday night in Arizona. Instead of a stabilizing debut, he was chased after just 3.1 innings, having given up 8 earned runs on 9 hits and 3 walks.
The damage snowballed in the fourth. Mize got the first out, then Arizona strung together five straight hits and a walk before his night was over.
He left with the bases loaded and the Padres already down 5-0. Kyle Hart entered in relief, and all three inherited runners crossed the plate.
By the time the dust settled, Arizona had rolled to a 10-4 win.
Mize had already been tagged for two runs in the third on a sacrifice fly and a solo home run before the inning that broke the game open. The 8 runs allowed pushed his season earned run average from 2.70 to 3.40.
While Mize was getting hit around, Arizona starter Mitch Bratt was dealing. He allowed just 1 hit and no runs over 7 shutout innings.
San Diego’s offense stayed quiet until the ninth, when Fernando Tatis Jr. finally put the Padres on the board with a 465-foot solo homer. It was the team’s only run, and Tatis’ 161st career home run with the Padres, moving him into a tie for third-most in franchise history.
